      In this study, it was tried to explore the way to decide the best re-grinding time for tool life by the investigation of the characteristics of Surface broach and the roughness variance of the cutted surface according to wear.
      Test equipment is the hydraulic vertical broaching machine made in NACHI Co., Japan. The tool subjected of this study is the surface broach for slot cutting, which is made of HSS. Cutting sample is the sector shaft made of Cr-Mo alloy steel, which is a main part of steering gear box in automobile.
      Flank wear lands were measured by the universal measuring microscope, Tum-200B, made in TOPCON Co., Japan. The roughness variances of cutted surfaces were measured with the roughness tester, FORM-Talysurf, made in Taylor Hobson Co., U.K.
      As a result of this experiment, the growing trend of the flank wear land according to cutting length progresses very rapidly to some extent in initial stage, then very slowly to the wear critical point and rapidly again from the critical point. Increasing of cutting speed, the wear progress becomes rapid relatively, tool life is shorten, and wear critical point is hard to seize.
      The roughness variances of the cutted surfaces according to flank wear were investigated both directions, the cross and the parallel to broach travel. In cross direction, there is a trend relates to wear, which is applicable to the decision of the proper re-grinding time, but no obvious trend in parallel.
      For the decision of the proper re-grinding time of surface broach in field, it is important to grasp its own wear characteristics through the continuous observation and record, with portable microscope and so on , over the roughness of the cutted surface and the state of flank wear of the tool.
