잡지 편집디자인에 있어서 타이포그라피에 관한 연구 : 국내.국외 잡지의 내지에 나타난 조형요소 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

잡지 레이아웃의 기술적인 면모는 편집디자인을 하기 위한 완전한 기초가 되므로 이것에 대한 치밀하고 종합적인 이해가 요구된다. 또한 잡지는 디자인 면에서도 역시 다양성과 변화를 요구받고 있으며, 이에따라 레이아웃이나 일러스트레이션, 사진, 타이포그라피, 컬러 등의 요소를 응집하여 독자에게 전달한다. 이 가운데 타이포그라피 역시 잡지의 성격을 규정하는데 한층 더 중요한 요소로 등장하게 되었으며, 최근에 와서는 그 효용성과 기능성이 컴퓨터나 소프트웨어의 눈부신 발전과 맞물려 점차 다양화하고 있는 추세이다. 그러므로 본 논문은 전문적인 저널리즘 매체로서의 잡지라는 개념 설정하에 그 형식화 문제를 다루어 보았다. 잡지 편집 디자인의 구성적 요소들을 많은 잡지들의 예를 들어 분석하여 디자인적 방법론을 알고, 잡지 디자인에 있어 타이포그라피의 역할과 중요성, 그 운용의 조화를 중점으로 연구해 보았다. 그러기 위해서 나타난 몇가지 중요한 요소들에 대해 효과적인 원리들을 분석하고 다음과 같이 제시하고자 하였다.
1. 글자의 스타일과 절제 2. 자족의 고수 3. 단 유형의 표준화 4. 글자 명세의 표준화 (① 지면에 가장 잘 읽히는 타이포그라피를 제공 ② 잡지의 편집 공간 전체에 균등한 농도를 제공) 5. 글자의 일관성 있는 적용 6. 머리글에서 글자체 제한 등으로 정리될 수 있다.
그리고 잡지의 타이포그라피 운용에 있어서 적절한 방안을 제시해 보면 첫째, 디자이너들은 서체의 특성을 신중히 파악하여 글의 내용을 잘 반영해 줄 수 있는 적절한 글꼴을 선택하여 활용하여야 한다. 둘째, 타이포그라피는 타이틀페이지에서 활자를 다룰 때에 활자 자체가 지니는 조형미와 빈여백과의 공간비례, 다른 조형요소들과의 조화를 생각하여 운용되어져야 한다. 세째, 각 잡지의 특성에 맞는 서체를 선정하여 운용하는 것이 그 매체의 고유성을 유지할 수 있는 방법이다. 이러한 방안들이 자연스럽게 어우러질때 한글 타이포그라피의 수준은 다양화와 전문화라는 목표를 향해한 단계 더 향상될 수 있을 것이다.
잡지를 분석해 보면 그 시대의 문화를 읽을 수 있고 편집디자인의 맥과 흐름을 일목요연하게 파악할 수도 있다. 우리나라의 잡지의 역사를 생각해 볼 때, 이제는 우리도 우리만의 독특한 디자인의 편집문화를 가질 때가 되었다고 생각한다. 그리고 외국잡지의 무분별한 추종이나 모방에서 벗어나 우리만의 독특한 잡지 문화를 만들어보려는 시도와 노력이 필요하겠다.
잡지에 있어 효과적인 원리들은 결국 디자인에 있어서 어떠한 요소들을 불변적인 요인으로 만들것인가에 관한 문제이다. 잡지의 디자인과 꾸미기는 미술과 타이포그라피가 완벽하게 체득되고 종합될 것을 요구하고 그 유일한 기초로서 가능한 한 어느 정도의 대담함과 실험적인 정신 둘 다 갖출 것이 바람직 할 것이다.
정보화 사회로 빠르게 치닫고 있는 현대 사회에서 독창적이고 과학적인 한글서체의 개발이 궁극적으로는 우리나라의 문화발전에 큰 몫을 하리라고 기대한다. 이에 한국 잡지가 편집과 타이포그라피면에서 외국과는 다른 독창적인 혁명을 이루기를 기대해 본다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Since the technical aspect of magazine layout is the perfect basis for editing design, we need to understand it closely and synthetically. Also magazines are asked variety and transition also in the aspect of design and according to this, are conveyed to readers, condensing the elements such as layout or illustration, photos, typography and colors. Among these, typography has also appeared as an even more important element in prescribing the characteristics of magazines and recently tends to vary more and more with its efficiency and its function in gear with the remarkable development of computers or software. Therefore, this paper dealt with the formalization issue after establishing the concept that magazines are media for professional journalism. I knew the methodology of design by analyzing the components of editorial design for magazines with the examples of many magazines and studied centering on role, importance and operational harmony of typography in magazine design. For that, I analyzed effective principles for several explicit significant elements and wanted to present them as follows.
1. The style and control of letters 2. Adhesion of type family 3. Standardization of column types 4. Standardization of letter specification (① providing typography best read in pages ② providing equal density to the entire editing space of a magazine) 5. The consistent application of letters 6. Heading can be arranged by limiting its character style or by using any other ways.
And the appropriate methods in operating typography of magazines are as follows. First, designers should grasp deliberately the characteristics of character style, select and utilize suitable character styles which can well reflect the content of articles. Secondly, typography should be operated by considering formative beauty inherent in types themselves, spatial proportion with empty space and harmony with other formative elements when handing types in title pages. Thirdly, selecting and operating character styles fitting the characteristics of each magazine is the way in which one can preserve the peculiarity of the medium. When these methods are naturally mixed, the level of Hangul typography will be able to improve some more towards the goal of diversification and specialization.
The analysis of magazines can provide us with reading the culture of the age and with understanding obviously the stream of editing design. At the thought of Korean magazine history, I think that now it is the time for us to have our own peculiar editing culture of design. And getting out of following or imitating foreign magazines indiscriminately we will have to attempt and try to make our own peculiar magazine culture.
The effective principles in magazines are, in the end, the matter on what elements will be made unchangeable factors in design. The design and arrangement of magazines ask fine art and typography to be perfectly learned from experience and to be synthesized. And it will be desirable to be equipped with both boldness to some extent if possible and experimental spirit as its unique bases.
In the modem society rushing rapidly toward an informationized society, I expect the development of original and scientific Hangul character style to contribute to that of Korean culture. Herewith I expect Korean magazines to make original revolution other than foreign ones in editing and in typography.
