An ultrastructural study of Guinea Pig myocardium with established experimental left ventricular hypertrophy was undertaken to determine size and relative volume of myofibrils and mitochondria and to describe changes in the ultrastructure of them with this condition.
In the change in relative volume of myofibrils and mitochondria, left ventricular mitochondrial volume per fiber decreased after stenosis of ascending aorta. On the other hand, that of myofibrils increased with time.
Sarcomere after stenosis of ascending aorta showed decrease in length. on the other hand, there is a general trend of increasing in length of mitochondria. The ultrastructure changes in myofibrils found at fourth day an eighth day after were fraying, contraction band, altered Z-band and altered intercalated disc. The intensity of the changes was related to the length of time that the artery was narrowed.
