액션 영화 스토리 전개 방식에 따른 영화음악 작곡 기법에 관한 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

영화의 장르는 멜로, 코미디, 로맨틱 코미디, 액션, 스릴러 판타지 등 다양하게 분류되며 그와 함께 영화음악 또한 영화 성격을 반영한 다양한 스타일과 개성, 작곡 기법들이 존재하며 발전 해오고 있다.

본 연구에서는 2000년 초부터 현재까지의 액션 장르 영화 5가지를 선정하여, 그 영화음악을 비교 분석함으로서 영화의 스토리 전개 방식과 액션 영화음악의 작곡 기법의 상관관계를 찾고, 그에 관한 액션 장르 영화음악의 작곡 기법에 관한 연구이다.

액션 영화란 물리적 폭력성이 줄거리의 주요한 소재로 격한 액션신을 포함한 영화를 말한다. 기본적으로 뚜렷한 선과 악의 이분법적 구분을 볼 수 있으며, 갱스터 영화, 홍콩, 느와르, 서부극, SF영화 등이 이에 속한다.
장르의 특성상 주인공들의 격한 육체적 움직임과 물리적 폭력성을 포함하는 장면이 많은 액션 영화의 스토리 전개 방식을 도입-전개-절정-결말의 4단계로 분류하였고, 영화 음악의 작곡에 있어서도 제시-발전-확장-축소의 4단계의 전개 방식을 반영하고 있음을 발견할 수 있었다. 스토리와 영화음악의 전개 방식에 존재하는 상관관계를 찾고, 영화음악의 작곡 기법을 세세하게 분석하여, 액션 장르 영화음악의 작곡 기법을 도출하였다.
스토리 전개 방식에 따른 음악적 특징은 다음과 같다. 도입부는 사건 발단의 원인이 되는 전개 방식에 따라 음악 또한 앞으로 전개 될 전반적인 영화음악의 분위기를 표현하고 사용 악기 및 주법을 부분적으로 제시한다. 전개부는 발단이 된 사건이 전개되는 부분으로서 음악 역시 도입부에서 제시한 분위기와 유사한 형태와 스토리 전개 방식과 장면에 맞추어 새로운 분위기의 음악을 작곡하며 도입부에서의 사용 악기 및 주법과 더불어 새로운 악기 및 주법을 추가하고 음가, 음정, 음역, 화성, 리듬 등을 변주하며 음악의 구성, 형식, 형태를 발전시킨다. 절정부는 사건이 절정에 이르는 부분으로 전개부에서 사용한 악기 및 주법 이외에 절정부에서 전개되는 스토리 전개 방식과 장면에 따라 악기를 추가하고 전개부에서 변주하여 발전시킨 음악의 구성, 형식, 형태를 다양하고 연속된 변주를 통하여 확장한 형태로 작곡하였다. 결말부는 사건의 해결과 결말에 이르는 부분인데 도입부와 전개부, 절정부에 사용한 악기 및 주법 중 결말부에서 전개되는 스토리 전개 방식과 장면에 따라 선택적으로 사용하여 작곡하였는데 음악의 구성, 형식, 형태를 축소한 형태로 작곡하였다.

단, 2000년 이후의 5가지 액션 영화만을 선정하여 분석한 결론을 제시함에 있어, 일부 제한된 범위의 영화를 기반으로 작성된 연구 결과로 보편성을 제시하기보다는 액션 영화음악의 작곡 기법 중 하나의 예시로 제시하는 바이다. 이와 관련된 더 많은 연구를 기대하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

There are many genres in movie such as a romance, comedy, romantic comedy, action, thrillier, fantasy movie, etc. Also, film music has been developed according to the characteristics of the movies and various compositional techniques exist.

This paper is about the study on compositional techniques of original Soundtracks from five action movies(2005-2016), finding an interrelation between compositional techniques and the developments of the story in these movies by analyzing them comparatively.

One of the most crucial factors in action movies is a storyline full of physical violence. Action movies have a clear distinction between good and evil. Gangster, noir, western and SF film belong to this genre.

Given the features of an action movie, including physical violence and violent motion of actors or actresses, the way of development of the story is categorized in four steps; the introduction, the development of the theme, climax, and summing up. Also, it could be found that four steps development is reflected in film music composition; the presentaion, development, expansion, reduction. Through the analysis on compositional techniques of original Soundtracks from action movies, this study can draw the idea of compositional techniques of film music in action movies.

The musical features are as followed. In the story, the presentation part usually shows audiences the origin of an affair. So does the film movie score. It gives expression to the overall atmosphere of the film music, fragmentarily representing musical instruments and the playing. In the development part, the new scores are composed. They are also representing the similar mood which is expressed in its earlier stage. The new musical instruments and the playing techniques are added, and the musical construction is expanded by playing a variation on a tune, note, and harmony. With the story at its peak, new instruments and composing techniques are added in the expansion part, which are not used in previous states. The composer writes the film music in the more varied manner through the diverse and continuous variation. In the reduction part, the story comes to the end. A smaller scale of music composition is found in this stage. The reduced format is made by selectively using the musical instruments and the playing which are expressed in the previous three stages.

This paper merely gives an example of compositional techniques of film music in action movies rather than the general methods on film scoring of action genre, considering that only five action movies are examined in this study and the basis of the limited extent. I am expecting further study on this field.
