다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

A View on three historical formations of popular culture in China Shin Hyunjoon Since 1990s 'popular culture' (or 'pop culture') in mainland China has exploded along with the expansion of market economy. Is this kind of popular culture just a recent phenomenon? When it is defined as broadly as 'beliefs and practices of ordinary people', it has existed in any formation in China before this period. This essay attempts to investigate three formations of popular culture in China, periods of which are divided into three: 'until seventies'; 'the Eighties (New Period)'; and 'from nineties (Post-New Period)'.
