      호남 역사에 대한 인식의 현황과 대책 = Issues and Solutions for the Distorted Historical Recognition of ‘Honam’ Area

      This study intends to review the contemporary understanding of history of ‘Honam’ and examines the ways to resolve problems associated with the distorted and negative recognition thereof. Different from the administrative district denominated as ‘Jeonrado 羅道)’*, the region of ‘Honam’ as an emotionally defined zone was established in the 16thcentury.SincetheearlyageofJoseon(朝鮮) dynasty, lots of Confucian scholars who kept the fidelity to respective principles have been chosen this area; and the image of remoteness of this area placed distant from central government far away has been consolidated the choice of this area as a place for exile. It has been understood that the inclination of people residing in area a hometown of justice represented as the images of fidelity, criticism, and activism was attributable to the background of building Honam Confucian scholars; and the other images of people associated with the remoteness of this place have been organized with emotions alienation, resistance, and discontent. And, due to the abundance of natural resources from wide flat fields, the place also called a place of art and inherited many subject matters traditional art ripened by the allowance and quality of life. In addition, the area of ‘Honam’ is also described in authorized official textbooks of Korean History for high school students as the hometown traditional art and justice; and as a leader of democratization contemporary history. There is no difference between the viewpoint positive recognition of the people residing in the area of ‘Honam’ seeing history and that of the descriptions of the history in such text books. However, the distorted image and recognition of the area of ‘Honam’ is diffused throughout the whole contemporary society. What could be the cause of such a distorted recognition? The lack of the historical origin, the dependent and exclusive inclination of people, the regional status that had been remaining in historical periphery and the regionalism can be pointed out as the causes brought about such a problem of distorted image and recognition. The ways to resolve such problems were explored in this study; and the domestic politics was pointed out as one of the background of the diffusion of the frame of discrimination that exploited the regionalism. Thus the transformation of this political frame is necessary and important; and for this purpose, the importance of the issue of regional cooperation was presented for the balanced national development of Korea. Besides, the cultivation of regional competitiveness through enlightening the strength of people in ‘Honam’ area was suggested as the shortcut to the society free from such a distorted recognition. And finally, the necessity to promote the Observance of Public Order was proposed to improve the local image. It would take the people long time and efforts to be free from such a distorted understanding of ‘Honam’ area. Nevertheless, the regional cooperation would be an imperative choice for the people in this area to be living in the future of ‘Honam’ area fair and from regional discrimination.
