This paper is an attempt to analyse Grimkés imagistic nature poems in the historical context of 1920s America. Much of her work has been rigorously ignored by many critics who have tended to see Grimké's verses as conventional and sentimental nature poetry. However, Angelina Weld Grimké presents racial consciousness poems by employing symbolic dictions or images out of nature. In her nature poems, she portrays protests against lynching and racial violence history by combining symbolic nature imagery. Also, she draws special meaning from pastoral imagery in order to express disappointment and the disenchantment in black community. Grimké also uses the landscape of nature to affirm the humanity of black women rendered invisible by the dominant culture. Nature provides an objective correlative through which she could articulate racial oppression in America. Despite given many constraints on a female author at that time. Angelina Weld Grimké stands as a gifted and underappreciated author of the Harlem Renaissance.
