Attempts to develop a new test method for chemical stability of lubricants were made by a modified ISOT rig and Taguchi method of L?(2?) orthogonal arrays. Design of experiments showed that some factors such as temperature, NO₂, and catalyst had significant effect on chemical stability of lubricants. Test results from the rig tests were then compared with vehicle tests and the newly developed test method showed close correlation between the bench test and vehicle test in chemical stability of lubricants.
