      In describing the history of modern Korean church music, it is the field of Hymn that must not be excluded for it has been received as the symbol of the western music as well as church music. Indeed, in the process of receiving it, it had influenced a great deal on the western music, the spreading of view on music and education.
      In the history of the Korean Christianity, the proportion of the Hymn is never be ignored. Because considable numbers of historical matters of Korean church are related to it. For instance, at the association and disintegration of denominations, on important matter of the Hymn.
      This study has two object at a time. The one is to reveal the position & role of the Hymn in the history of modern Korean music and the other is to reveal it in: that of modern Korean Christianity. Therefore, this study is about the history of modern Korean Christianity as well as that of modern Korean music. This research has been done as following methods.
      First, making a basis for various subjects and contents by pay attention to the performance and limit of already established preceding researches about the Hymn.
      Second, providing bibliographical data as a basis for various researches on the Hymn through annotations of the original Hymn.
      Third, providing the performance of it by observing the modern Korean Hymn's influence & position to the history of modern Korean music and modern Korean Christianity.
      Fourth, finding what the Hymn had effect on not only externally but also internally and how it was unfolded as not the history of missionary music but that of ethnic church music.
      As a result of studying on the reception history of modern Korean church music, I could get following conclusions.
      First, though the Hymn is the most influencing music in popularizing the western music in Korea at the early stage of it. Before the 1920's when there was no place to learn the western music other than school, church is the only place where all social classes can learn and sing the Hymn
      Second, the association and disintegration of church happened and came up to surface related with the Hymn. The forms of conflict appeared in between missionaries, denominations, and missionaries and Korean church or within the same religious group. The causes were ecclesiastical authority, economin copyright, the difference of views on theology and so on.
      Third, after the 1980's ethnical music & Hymn, being hot issues, had already been tried. The methods are contrafactum and adoption Korean traditional music.
      Fourth, the control of music was also done to the Hymn as a culture governance of Japan. the scripts against Japan were revised or deleted.
      Fifth, after the receving the western music, the matter of joining between the western and Korean music in translation of lyrics and scripts themselves had been discussed and moreover up to the level of music & language grammar
      Sixth, the Hymn also affected the spreading or the Korean language(Han-GeuI) to people. They learned Korean by singing the Hymn, therefore and bought a book of the Hymn ahead of the Bible.
      Seventh, kinds of patriotic songs singing the independence of Korea were influenced by the Hymn in the aspect of form & content. In addition, at the period of composer absent secularly invented songs adopted the melodies of the Hymn. Thus it became the secular songs.
      Eighth, such as partisanship & characteristics of Korean church and the views of each missionary was reflected in the Hymn. the missionary's view of church music came to a basis of building the ideolgy of modern Korean music and it had effect on forming the thought of general music.
      Nineth, as the passage of receiving church music other than that of China which has been known till now, newly that of Japan is detected.
      One of the biggest harvest in the study on the modern Hymn is that lots of hot issues about the church & Korean music, being discussed now, had already been discussed in the process of receiving the Hymn in the past. Therefore, This historical study on the modern Hymn will support considerable suggestions and standards to phenomena and hot issues of the present music.
