Physical Education and Moral Education: Plato’s and Aristotle’s Views

국문 초록 (Abstract)

현대사회에서 많은 사람들이 신체적 건강에 대한 관심이 높아 가고 있으며, 심지어 집착에 가까운 경우도 종종 있다. 특히 근래에 이르러 남녀노소를 불문하고 잘 생기고 예쁜 얼굴과 함께 날씬하고 균형 잡힌 몸매를 선호하는 경향이 두드러지며 젊고 생기 있는 모습을 유지하고 건강히 장수하는 것을 그 어떤 것보다 가치 있게 여긴다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 스포츠와 체육활동의 가치는 여전히 우리 사회에서 평가절하 되어있다. 여전히 문을 중시하고 무를 천시했던 동양의 유교적 풍조와 함께 정신은 육체보다 가치 있고 우위를 차지한다는 서양의 이원론적 사상이 우리 사회에 깊숙이 자리 잡고 있는 것 같다. 또한, 체육교육은 공교육에서 하나의 과목으로써 그 가치와 중요성이 늘 의심 받아 왔다. 그 예로, 교육과정 개편 시 체육 과목은 수업 시간이 축소되었으며 나아가 교육으로써 체육의 가치는 흔히 논쟁의 주요 대상이 되곤 한다. 전형적으로 학교 체육교육은 학생들로 하여금 신체적 건강을 성취하도록 도와주는 수단으로써 그 정당성을 가지고 있다. 즉, 체육교육을 통해 단지 육체의 이득만을 얻는 것으로 인식되고 있다. 하지만, 본 논문은 체육교육은 단지 육체의 교육뿐만 아니라 정신의 교육, 즉 도덕교육으로서 그 가치와 중요성을 가짐을 밝혀 보고자 한다. 스포츠 혹은 체육교육과 도덕교육 사이에 본질적인 연관성이 있다는 주장은 항상 그 반대되는 주장에 부딪혀 왔다. 많은 철학자, 교육자, 현대 스포츠 비평가들은 스포츠나 체육교육이 좋은 가치를 증진시키기도 하지만 오히려 우리가 잘못된 가치로 여기는 승리에 대한 과도한 집착, 그로 인한 비도덕적 행위 또한 가르친다고 반박한다. 하지만, “체육교육은 도덕적 인격을 형성하는데 이바지한다”라는 주장은 수세기 동안 많은 철학자와 교육자들에 의해 끊이지 않고 논의되고 있으며, 그 유래는 아마도 서양철학의 근간으로 거슬러 올라가야 할 것이다. 고대 그리스인에게 체육교육은 언제나 주요한 관심사였고, 플라톤과 그의 가장 뛰어난 제자, 아리스토텔레스는 체육교육과 정신의 교육(도덕교육)은 밀접한 관련성이 있다고 보았다. 따라서 체육교육이 어떻게 도덕교육에 공헌할 수 있는지를 이해하기 위해서 인류역사상 가장 위대한 두 철학자인 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스는 이 문제에 대해서 어떤 견해와 생각을 가지고 있었는지 알아보는 일은 가치로운 연구일 것이다. 본 논문의 목적은 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스의 체육교육에 관한 견해를 심도 있게 고찰해 봄으로써 체육교육이 가지는 도덕교육의 기능으로써 가치와 중요성을 논의해 보고자 한다.
