대학기록관 사진기록물 관리에 관한 연구 : 한국외대 역사기록관 중심으로

In writing, an event is described in words while stopping time in place. On the other hand, in the photographic record , an object is described objectively for how it looks and what it does. No intervention in the description makes the time of the photographic record more real than the time in writing. That is to say, the photographic record shows the past in a direct, detailed way, which makes it persuasive.
Since the development of the first camera prototype, Camera Obscura, during the Renaissance in the 16th century, cameras have undergone technology development and become a necessity in modern society. They are being used more than any other recording media. People intentionally or unintentionally do the photographic record record management when they take, develop, and upload photos to the Internet. They often do so without knowing. For individual photos, a lack of systematic the photographic record management is not a big issue. However, it could be an issue of disappearance and damage for the photos of the government or public offices. Photos are created with light and chemical reaction by a camera and are subject to damage and alteration due to the characteristics of cameras as a mechanic device.
Also, photos are records that are valuable at the time of production but become significantly valuable over time as well. For this reason, it is urgently needed to take additional measures which consider the characteristics of photos instead of just managing them along with other paper records or treating them as one of many records.
This thesis looks into the photographic record management and its research area is limited to university archives. A growing number of universities try to emphasize their mottos and find their place in society through exhibitions of their history. In the process, they feel the need to collect and store various records that show their history. For this purpose, they build university archives. Unfortunately, most university archives do not have systematic management methods for photos. Like other archiving places, they manage the photographic record records just as apart of paper records. Against this backdrop, this thesis looks into the current the photographic record record management situations at university archives and searches for efficient and systematic management methods as well as a system to put the photographic record records into the public use.
This thesis took a close look at the case of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Archive(HUFS Archive) for the following reason. Due to its poor management, HUFS Archive had a risk of losing its the photographic record records that are closely related to its history. After establishing an archive, however, HUFS Archive implemented a systematic management method which not only solved the issue in the past but also led to the successful management of the photographic record records that HUFS Archive has collected since.
