이중섭의 회화, 재료와 기법의 독창성

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Lee Jung Seob(1916-1956) is one of the most famous and popular artists, widely loved by the public but compared to his status, there have been not many academic researches. One of the reasons behind the situation is that it was not easy for researchers to meet and see his works as they are traded at the highest price in the market and there has been a few exhibition at public museums. To eliminate these uncertainties and renew Lee Jung Seob’s presence in the history of modern arts of Korea, this study is to review overall scale and scope of his works of art and analyze his unique choice of materials and method of use, to prove his unique identity as an artist.
Lee Jung Seob drew so many pictures on paper and aluminum lining paper, using pencil, ink, ink stick and crayon. Sometimes, he used oil paints, mixed with industrial paints or used knife and stencil pens (iron pens), instead of pencil and brush. Even with similar paper plan, he created something different with each materials and methods. Using materials available during wartime and unique painting methods, he rebuilt the tradition of mural paints of Goguryeo, craft and folk art of Chosun Dynasty and literary paintings. We call his works of art “traditional” not because he drew bulls or used Korean letters for autography but because he achieved unique methods of arts, with available materials added with ample sensibility and personality. This is the ultimate destination all modern and contemporary artists have been striving to reach.
The study is based on the new data collected from Lee Jung Seob Catalogue Raisonné conducted with the sponsorship of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Also it is based on the collaboration with National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Arts for the exhibition, 《100-year Legacy of Lee Jung Seob 1916-1956》 to celebrate 100th anniversary of the master’s birth.
