제조업 사업체의 성장과 퇴출: 다사업체 기업 소속 사업체와 단독사업체와의 비교를 중심으로 = Growth and Failure of Manufacturing Plants in Korea: Single-unit versus Multi-unit Plants

This paper investigates the relationship between postentry employment growth and establishment characteristics in the Korean manufacturing sector. Following Dunne et al.(1989), we examine the extent to which size and age affect failure rates and growth rates of surviving establishments. We distinguish establishments owned by single-establishment firms from those owned by multi-establishment firms. The results show that growth rates of surviving establishments and failure rates decline with size. The expected growth rates decline with size in both types of establishments. The relationship between age and the growth rates is not clear. Our results show that the relationship between establishment size and the expected growth rates is different between Korea and U.S in the case of establishments owned by multi-establishment firms.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 2006-2013년 제조업 전수 사업체 자료를 사용하여, 신규 진입한 제조업 사업체를 대상으로 사업체의 규모 및 연령이 진입 이후 고용성장에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 분석에는 Dunne et al.(1989)의 방법론을 이용하였다. 분석 결과 규모가 커질수록 성장률이 감소하지만 연령의 효과는 뚜렷하지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 이는 규모 증가에 따른 생존사업체의 성장률 감소가 퇴출률 감소보다 크기 때문으로 나타났으며, 단독사업체와 다사업체 기업에 속한 사업체 모두에서 관측되었다. 본 연구의 분석결과는 다사업체 기업에 속한 사업체에서 규모와 성장률 간 양의 관계를 확인한 Dunne et al.(1989)의 미국 결과와는 대조를 이룬다. 본 연구는 국내 최초로 단독사업체와 다사업체 기업에 속한 사업체의 성장과 퇴출에 대해 분석함으로써 국내 제조업 사업체가 미국 등 선진국과 다른 성장 매커니즘을 가질 수 있음을 보였다.
