Gastrointestinal carcinoid tumors develop from Kulchitsky cells located in the crypts of Lieberkuhn. Gastric carcinoid tumors were previously recognized as rare, benign neoplasms. Reported cases of gastric carcinoid diagnosed by endoscopic examination are uncommon. And the gastric carcinoid tumor with massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding is a rare disease entity. We experienced a case of gastric carcinoid tumor admitted to the hospital because of hematemesis. On the gastrofibroscopic examination, 8mm sized polypoid mass with central umbilication and active spurting bleeding was noted on the greater curvature side of the upper gastric body. And the biopsy specimen showed carcinoid cells. EUS (endoscopic ultrasonography) revealed the lesion was limited to submucosal layer. It thus appears that the awareness of gastric carcinoid tumor in the differential diagnosis of gastrointestinal bleeding is necessary.
So we herein report this case with a brief review of pertinent literature.
