국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 방과 후 수업 형태로 이루어진 어느 고등학교 사회 교사의 다문화 수업에 대한 질적사례연구이다. 연구자는 다문화 수업에 대한 공감대가 무척 낮은 서울 소재 고등학교에서 인종적-문화적 편견과 차별의 극복을 목표로 삼는 다문화 수업 방안을 공동 구상하였다. 방과 후 다문화 수업에 대한 참여관찰 및 심층면담을 통해 연구자는 그 동안 상당부분 블랙박스로 남겨져 있던 다문화 수업의 미시적 상호작용의 실제 및 교사와 학생이 함께 만드는 다문화 수업의 교육적 의미를 분석하고자 했다. 현장 학교의 맥락에서 드러난 다문화 수업의 실제 의미를 분석함으로써 본 연구는 제한된 환경 속에서 다문화교육의 가능성과 문제점을 동시에 발견할 수 있었다. 본 연구의 결과들은 성공적인 다문화교육의 정착을 위해서는 학교 구조와 문화의 근본적인 변화가 수반되어야 함을 시사하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this qualitative case study is to describe the aspects of “The Tales of A Multicultural Society(TMS)”, an after-school multicultural course implemented by a local high school social studies teacher, and then to interpret the multifaceted meanings emerging from those multicultural lessons. TMS, codeveloped by the researcher and the teacher, consisted of 10 instructional lessons (50 minutes per each). The researcher video-recorded entire lessons and conducted in-depth interviews with the teacher and selected 7 students. In sum, the researcher observed both possibilities and limitations in TMS lessons. Although students’ narratives exhibited TMS’ positive impact on the students’ multicultural attitude towards ‘other people’, the grammar of schooling posed daunting obstacles for the teacher to achieve the goals of multicultural education. The findings of the present study request for further micro-ethnographic research on the enacted curriculum of various multicultural courses and the construction of multicultural pedagogical knowledge.
