      A Study on Civic Engagement and Internal Political Efficacy of Young People in South Korea

      This study begins from the assumption that young people should build internal political efficacy through civic engagement and citizenship education practice. The aims of this study are firstly to explore the reason why Korean students shows lower level of internal political efficacy and civic engagement than average groups in other countries. Secondly, this study aims to find out the effectiveness of formal citizenship education in developing internal political efficacy and civic engagement. The third aim is to find out whether there are differences in the development of internal political efficacy and civic engagement according to socio-demographic backgrounds. As a conclusion, this research suggests several points for promoting citizenship education. Firstly, internal political efficacy plays a key role in civic engagement among young people but internal political efficacy cannot be obtained without educational intervention. This research suggests that citizenship education for young people can help young people to have opportunities for developing internal political efficacy. Secondly, in order to promote citizenship education, formal educational policy needs to be changed. This research suggests that citizenship education should be delivered through the formal national curriculum and its importance should be recognized as such. Finally, internal political efficacy can also be developed by youth activities and youth work whose importance is highlighted by the Youth Activities Promotion Law. Therefore, it is suggested that citizenship education for internal political efficacy can be provided by youth activities or youth work.
