The purpose of this study is to review the role of Center for Teaching and Learning(CTL) and to suggest future directions for the CTL in Korea. CTL was established in US Universities in 1962 but mainly from the late 1960`s. First, this study reviews the history of CTLs in the USA. Second, it summarizes four implications from USA CTLs. Third, it reviews current state of CTLs in Korea, and finally, suggests future directions for CTLs in Korean universities. In the USA, before 1970, each faculty member had his/her responsibility to develope teaching competencies. The first CTL in the USA was Center for Research on Learning and Teaching, in 1962, at University of Michigan. In the mid-1970`s, several funds facilitated the establishment of CTLs`. Since 1990, university associations such as POD, AAHE, AACU supported CTL in a more organized way. Four main roles of CTL in the USA were faculty development, educational reform, diverse program development, and CTL`s outcome evaluation. First, faculty development meant faculty renewal, instructional development, and organizational development. AAHE especially contributed to faculty development in the USA. Second, conceptual framework for institutional change was suggested and many universities focused on educational reform. Third, each CTL developed their unique program for faculty and students. Fourth, assessing accomplishments of CTL was an issue to sustain the CTL. In Korea, the first CTL was established in Inha university. Now, in 2006, 102 CTLs have formed an association in the Nation. Although each CTL has tried to provide its service, more systemic approach is necessary. This study suggests four future development dicections for CTLs` in Korea. 1. It is necessary to improve systemic competency to plan and support faculty development. 2. CTL needs to develope and guide teaching models for the new environment. 3. More organized relationship needs to be established among CTLs` 4, More fund or monetary support should be secured for the stable management for CTL.
