The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of the Balanced Literacy Program on developing young children's reading and writing ability.
To examine the effects of this program the Balanced Literacy Program developed by the present researcher were applied to eighty four-year-old kindergarten children.
The results of the present study were as follows:
1. The results of survey showed that kindergarten teacher have much interests in teaching reading and writing for young children. However, their teaching methods did not have variety
2. The children in the experimental group who were exposed in Balanced Literacy Program showed statistically significant higher average in their the reading ability test than the children in the control group.
The above results could be interpreted that Balanced Literacy Program was effective for developing young children' reading ability.
3. The present program also turned out to be effective for developing children' writing ability. That is, the experimental group has also shown higher average score in writing ability test than the control group.
4. The results revealed that the children of the experimental group showed more interest and favorable attitude towards reading and writing activities than children in control group.
Recommendations and suggestions were made based on the results of the present study.
