This paper examines variable reduction patterns in sC (s = strident, C = consonant) onset consonant clusters, which have been observed in the development of English and Dutch child language. The /s/ in sC onset clusters has been viewed as an extrasyllabic segment in several previous studies on child consonant cluster reduction due to its properties which resist fitting into a canonical syllabic template. In this study, I take the next step by providing a model for child cluster reduction, Onset Competition Model. Under this model, /s/ in sC clusters in child phonology is represented as a degenerate syllable (lacking a nucleus) that is perceived as unstressed by children. When it comes to the selection mechanism for the optimal onset of a reduced syllable, OCM provides two principles: a) a stress preference and (b) a sonority preference, both of which are empirically well documented in child phonology. It will be shown that variable reduction patterns in sC clusters are the outcome of competition between the two principles for retaining maximal perceptual contrast. It will also be shown that OCM illustrates another realm of evidence for perceptually based accounts in phonology.
