Characteristics and origin of organic matters in the Van Mijenfjorden sediments, Svalbard Archipelago of the Arctic Ocean

Organic nitrogen contents in the sediments were calculated to estimate characteristics and origin of the organic matters in the Van Mijenfjorden, Svalbard Archipelago of the Arctic Ocean. In order to calculate the organic nitrogen content, organic nitrogen was removed by oxidation of organic matter using KOBr-KOH. As a result, inorganic nitrogen can account for ranging from 37% up to 82% of the total nitrogen content, and vice versa. TOC/N<SUB>tot</SUB> ratios vary between 10 and 17, whereas TOC/N<SUB>org</SUB> ratios show distinctly higher values ranging between 20 and 40 which are indicative for enhanced input of terrigenous organic matters into the Van Mijenfjorden during the Holocene. In particular, our data calculated from the core sediment are well coincided with those estimated by Winkelmann and Knies (2005) from the surface sediments of the Van Mijenfjorden and the adjacent fjord systems of the Svalbard Archipelago. Therefore, TOC/N<SUB>org</SUB> ratios seem to be more useful proxy for understanding of characteristics and origin of the organic matters deposited in the sediments of the polar ocean and the marginal seas.
