The purpose of this paper is to suggest an English teaching method using videos in the Korean EFL classroom. The paper discusses English teaching through video presentations with an emphasis on student-oriented activities. It further suggests a new type of student-centered English teaching method with a four-phase procedure to improve the communicative competence of Korean university students. Providing students with a more natural style of acquisition context in the classroom is important for this paper, because it is based on the concept of communicative language teaching.
Both Korean students and teachers are currently engaged in using videos and other forms of teaching materials to create natural language settings in their EFL classrooms. This paper demonstrates that learning can be more effective by utilizing student-oriented activities and their feedback with video and camcorder. Such communication-based English teaching with student-oriented activities through video has a pedagogical value for improving communicative competence that will eventually lead to a more fluent use of English in real-life situations.
