"서사론"의 개념과 역사 고찰 = A study on the concept and history of "narrative theory"

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 ‘서사’와 ‘서사론’에 관한 개념범주들을 고찰하고 이와 관련한 ‘서사론’의 역사에 관한 논의를 살펴보았다. 프린스에 의하면, ‘서사론’의 개념은, ‘서사론’을 ‘내러톨로지’로서 처음 명명한 토도로프의 구조주의적 관점, ‘서술론’을 ‘소설의 분석’과 관련하여 정밀, 체계화한 주네뜨계열 이론가의 관점, 그리고 최근 서사론자들이 다양한 분야에 걸쳐서 서사연구를 확장시키는 동향에 부합한 발(Bal)적 관점에서 범주화된다. 한편 코블리의 ‘서사론’의 개념은 프린스가 정의내린 것과 비교할 때 서사론의 텍스트를 ‘소설’, ‘신화’, ‘설화’ 등에 한정짓지 않은 포괄적인 것으로서 규정하고서, 1960년대 이후 번성한 구조주의적 서사론을 서사론의 특정 범주로서 다루고 있다. 서사론의 개념범주에 관한 이같은 입장 차이들은 서사론의 역사기술에 있어서도 반영되고 있다. 즉 서사론의 역사에 관해서 구조주의적 서사론을 중심으로 정리하면서 주네뜨, 슈탄젤 등의 이후를 서사론의 쇠퇴기로 보는 입장이 있다. 다른 한편으로 구조주의 중심의 서사론이 구조와 형식에 치우친 측면을 비판적으로 바라보고 서사론의 범주를 확장한 ‘서사 전환’, 즉 현재의 융복합적 접근방식의 서사론을 중심에 두는 입장이 있다. 전자의 서사론의 역사를 정리한 기술로는, 후스터레이, 허만의 것을 들 수 있으며 후자의 것으로는 코블리, 플루더닉의 것을 들 수 있다. 그리고 기존 서사론의 역사기술에서 역사주의적 관점이 결여된 점을 비판적으로 바라보는 맥헤일의 서사론의 역사 논의를 들 수 있다. 최근, 서사론의 개념들과 서사론의 역사기술들의 전개양상을 살펴볼 때 서사론의 서사 개념은 말로 된 것과 글로 된 것을 아우르고 있으며 소설중심의 허구적 서사를 넘어서서 논픽션, 법, 정신분석, 영화, 음악, 미디어 등 출현했거나 출현 가능한 서사들을 그 대상으로 삼고 있다. 서사론의 역사는 ‘서사’가 무엇을 의미하느냐를 너머, 누구를 위한 것이며 또한 어떠한 영향을 끼치는가와 관련하여 광범위한 영역으로까지 전개되어왔다. 즉 ‘서사론’의 분야와 연구방향도 ‘소설론’으로서의 내러톨로지(Narratology)로부터 포괄적 영역의 서사들을 아우르는 서사이론(Narrative Theory)으로 심화, 확장되고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper examines the concept of ‘narrative’, ‘narrative theory’ and the history of ‘narrative theory’. The concept of Prince`s ‘narrative theory’ can be explained by the arguments of Todorov who mentioned ‘narratology’ for the first time at the point of structural view, the arguments of Genette who systematized ‘narrative theory’ on the ‘analysis of novel’ at the point of a theorist, and Bal`s arguments, which accord with the trend of diverse and widening studies on ‘narrative theory’ by recent narrative theorists. Meanwhile, compared with Prince`s definition, Cobley defines comprehensively the text of ‘narrative theory’ as novels, myths and tales. He argued ‘narrative theory’ at the point of structuralism boomed after 1960s. These gaps of stance on the concept and category of ‘narrative theory’ can be found at the historiography of ‘narrative theory``. In other words, organizing the history of ‘narrative theory’ at the point of structuralism, the period after Stanzel is regarded as a decline phase. On the other hand, there is an argument, the ‘narrative turn’, which extends the category of ‘Narrative theory’ and criticizes ‘Narrative theory’ focused on structuralism is biased to structures and forms. Arguments based on the ‘narrative turn’ is relevant to current’s ‘narrative theory’ that sets a high value on convergent and integrative approaches. Hoesterey and Herman arranged the history of ‘narrative theory’, which is argued at the point of structuralism. Cobley and Fludernik arranged the history of ‘narrative theory’, which is argued at the perspective of the ‘narrative turn’. There is also McHale`s argument that criticizes the absence of Historicism on the description of narrative theory’s history. Examining recent concepts of ‘narrative theory’ and developments of the description on the history of ‘narrative theory’, the concept of narrative on the ‘narrative theory’ encompasses all objects whether it is verbal or written. In addition, It encompasses nonfiction, law, psycho-analysis, cinema, music, media, exceeding the fictional narrative focused on novels. The history of ‘narrative theory’ has developed to extensive fields, from the concept of what is ``narrative`` to the concept that for whom it is and what influence it have. Namely, The field of ‘narrative theory’ and study of that also extends from narratology as a ``novel theory`` to ‘narrative theory’ that encompasses comprehensive fields of narratives.
