채만식 『탁류(濁流)』의 "장소(場所)"에 관한 일 고찰 = A Study on the "Places" in Tark-ryu(濁流)

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문의 연구 목적은 채만식의 대표작 『濁流』(1939)에 나타난 ‘장소’의 성격을 규명하는 것이다. 이 작품에는, 그의 다른 작품에서도 그러하듯이 극적 요소가 강하게 나타나 있다. 주로 소설의 서두에서 공간적 배경을 통해 극적 요소를 강화한다. 이런극적 요소는 공간적 배경을 부각하기 위한 방법으로 사용된다. 그런데 소설 안에서 공간적 배경은 차츰 ‘장소’로 그 성격이 변화되어간다. 이 작품에서 중요한 장소는 ‘금강 하구’, ‘정주사의 집’, 그리고 ‘군산미두장’이다. ‘금강 하구’는 독자를 텍스트 소통상황으로 안내하는 관문 역할을 한다. 그러면서 ‘행동적내부성behavioral insideness’이나 ‘부수적 외부성incidental outsideness’의 장소 정체성을 지닌다. ‘정주사의 집’은 그 가족 간의 진정성과 정서적 교감이 결여된 장소이다. 그래서 그곳은 ‘객관적 외부성(objective outsideness)의 정체성을 갖는다. 한편 ’군산미두장’은 당시 식민 자본의 왜곡상과 부정성을 표상하면서, ‘행동적 내부성(behavioralinsideness)’ 또는 ‘감정이입적 내부성(empathetic insideness)’의 장소 정체성을 지닌다.『濁流』의 여러 장소 가운데 가장 중요한 곳은 ‘미두장’이다. 미두장은 매우 선명한‘장소감(sense of place)’을 통해 식민지 자본주의의 부정성과 왜곡상을 부각하기 위한장소로 기능한다. 이 작품의 주요 인물(정주사·고태수·장형보·박제호)들은 모두 식민자본의 하수인이 되어 도덕·양심을 내팽개쳐 버린 사람들이다. 그들을 통해 당시 황금만능사상이라는 모순된 가치관이 이식된 것을 확인할 수 있다. 요컨대, 『濁流』의 장소들은 각기 독특한 장소 정체성을 갖고 있지만, 그 중에서도‘미두장’이란 장소는 가장 선명한 ‘장소감’을 보여준다. 이런 선명성은 일제강점기 식민자본의 문제점을 비판하는 이 작품의 주제를 부각하는데 크게 기여하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The aim of this paper is to examine the character of ‘places’ in Tark-ryu(A Muddy Flow- 濁流, 1939), the representative work of Chae, Man-sik. The dramatic elements are revealed strongly in Tark-ryu. In the beginning of this novel, the writer bring into relief a spacial setting. By the way the setting functions as a ‘place’, not a ‘space’. The important places of this novel are ‘the mouth of Keum-river’, ‘the Mr. Joung´s home’, and ‘the exchange market of rice ticket(Midoojang) in Kunsan’. ‘The mouth of Keum-river’ is the place of a gateway that invites the readers into the text communication condition. The place identity of it is a ‘behavioral insideness’ or ‘incidental outsideness’. ‘The Mr. Joung´s home’ is the place that a authenticity and a emotional rapport among the Joung’s family are lacked. Then the place identity of it is ‘objective outsideness’. ‘Midoojang in Kunsan’ is the place that represent the distortion of the colonial capital. And it present the place identity of ‘behavioral insideness’ or ‘empathetic insideness’ ‘Midoojang in Kunsan’ is the most important place. That place roles a functions that emphasize the injustice and distortion of the colonial capitalism in 1930’. The main characters in this novel(Mr. Joung, Ko Tae-soo, Jang Hyung-bo, and Park Jae-ho) are the perpetraters of the colonial capital. Therefore, All of them intertain a contradictory perspective To sum up, the places in Tark-ryu each has a unique place identity. In specialty, ‘Midoojang in Kunsan’, the most important place represent the vividest sense of place. This vividness strengthen the theme of this work that criticize the problem of capitalism in the Japanese colonial period.
