Webtoon IP-based reality entertainment refers to conversion of Webtoon IP (Intellectual Property) into reality entertainment contents. Webtoon IP refers to webtoons as source materials that can be converted into multimedia to generate continuous value. As the pandemic amplifying the competition of the OTT (Over-The-Top) market and global content, reality entertainment based on Webtoon IP has emerged as a medium conversion method to secure the competitiveness of Webtoon IP in the global market and utilize it in various ways.
This study aims to examine the phenomenon of webtoons converting to reality entertainment focusing on its genre disparity that foregrounds realism. Based on the economics and interactivity of the web platform, webtoons have keenly responded to public demands, building unique stories in various materials and genres. As such, webtoon has been considered an attractive source content that can create lasting value through media transformation, leading to the formation of domestic content IP business ecosystem centered around webtoon IP. The coversion from fictional and reproducible genres to a realistic and improvisational genre requires a distinct storytelling strategy from the traditional media conversion.
Therefore, this study aims to contribute to the research history by analyzing the specificities of webtoon IP-based reality entertainment storytelling in the process of media conversion to heterogeneous genres. Considering that the conversion is still in its early stages with limited cases this thesis identify common story elements that connects heterogeneous genres. By utilizing webtoon IP, this study proves that the narrative quality of webtoon IP-based reality entertainment is enhanced. Overall, this study shows that webtoon IP-based reality entertainment continues to be a viable conversion strategy.
Based on the premise that webtoon IP can enhance the narrativity of reality shows, this study focuses on the conversion process of the webtoon IP-based reality shows <Money Game>, <City girls on the Climb>, and <Love Alarm Clap! Clap! Clap!>, aired in Korea. Before analyzing the media-conversion process, it is assumed that the conversion of webtoon IP into reality entertainment is possible due to the narrativity mix of fictionality and reality in reality enterntainments. Reality entertainment builds a narrativity that is a mixture of fiction and reality in that, although reality entertainment foregrounds reality and the improvisational actions of the cast, it incorporates fictional devices to shape the actions of the cast, build the concept of the program, and edits various situations or events for entertainment purposes.
Chapter 2 identifies the characteristics of webtoon IP-based reality entertainment as a database type content. This study notes that reality shows based on webtoon IPs do not consider webtoon IPs as a single linear story, but rather break them down into units of story elements in order to maintain a balance between the fictionality of webtoon IPs and the reality of reality shows. Based on Seymour Chatman's story structure theory, this study derives that the story elements of webtoon IPs function as ‘events' that form the core in the process of media conversion to reality entertainment. The elements of fictional events and the elements of real characters and backgrounds in webtoon IPs that make up the database are combined in various ways to create stories. The process of media conversion, in which individually partitioned elements are interrelatedly combined to create a story, follows the principle of ‘unit operation’ proposed by Ian Bogost.
Chapter 3 then analyzes how webtoons and reality shows are connected in terms of story formation in reality shows and the events in webtoon IPs based on their shared characteristic of ‘empathy-based content’. First, this study categorize empathy-based content into the types of low-mimetic and irony, based on Northrop Frye's story form classification. This study shows that combining elements of fictionalized events in webtoon IPs with elements of real-life characters, allows the creation of low-mimetic characters that experience similar concerns and emotions as real-life subjects. This creates a story that viewers can empathize with and emotionally connect to. Furthermore, this study shows that utilizing events from webtoon IP enables development of ironic characters that go from unreasonable situations to catastrophic outcomes, thereby forming stories that satirize contemporary Korean reality.
Chapter 4 analyzes the ways in which reality shows based on webtoon IPs expand the storyworlds of the original webtoon content by focusing on the webtoon IPs events, based on Marie-Laure Ryan's concept of transfictionality. The original webtoon IP events which are substituted as core events in reality entertainments, serve as the foundation for determining the direction of the story's trajectory, triggering a chain of events hat form a continuous story. In addition, the substituted core kernels act as a connector, establishing relationships among the cast members. The cast members freely interact with each other around the substituted event, building multifaceted relationships and experiencing complex conflicts. The event element of the webtoon IP triggers the connection between the characters, initiating various satellites that expand the original storyworlds, creating a distinct path from the original contents as the story progresses. By forming a cohesive story and strengthening the relationship between characters, the expanded stroryworld enhances the narrativity of reality entertainment.
Reality entertainment based on webtoon IP encompasses a database containing both fictional and realistic story elements. The elements of fictional events in the webtoon IP function as links between characters, generating diverse satellite events. This not only enables the possibility of creating varied stories that do not overlap with the original webtoon, it also strengthens the narrativity of reality entertainment, bolstering its competitiveness and enabling sustained viewer engagement.
