왈저와 흄의 자연주의 정치철학 = 이상주의 정치철학에 대한 두 가지 대응

국문 초록 (Abstract)

왈저의 이론은 현대 정치철학의 논쟁구도에서 공동체주의의 대표적 이론들 중 하나로 규정되어 왔다. 이 논문은 왈저의 이론을 공동체주의로 규정하기보다 이상주의 정치철학에 대한 비판과 그 대안으로 규정할 것을 제안하면서 그러한 대안적 기획의 원형으로서 흄의 정치철학을 제시하고자 한다. 이 논문은 왈저와 흄의 비교를 통해 이상주의(idealistic) 정치철학에 대한 대안으로서 어떤 형태의 정치철학을 그리는 것이 바람직한지 타진해 볼 것이다. 대안으로서 제시된 정치철학은 흄의 정치철학에서 함축되는 보수성을 극복한 형태이어야 바람직한 것인데, 왈저가 흄과 달리 어떤 점에서 보수성을 극복해내고 있는지 밝히는 것도 이 논문이 해야 할 일이다.
2절에서 왜 왈저를 흄과 연결하려는지 논의하며 3절에서 흄의 도덕철학, 정치철학을, 4절에서는 왈저의 정치철학을 개괄한다. 5절에서 왈저와 흄의 기획은 이상주의를 함축하는 구성주의적 이성주의 기획에 대한 비판이라는 점을 보이고, 양자는 그 대안으로 자연주의적 정치철학을 시도한다는 점도 제시한다. 6절에서 양자가 제시한 대안적 기획에 함축되는 보수주의 문제를 논의하며, 이 문제와 관련하여 발견되는 흄의 정치철학과 왈저의 정치 철학의 차이를 분석하고 평가한다. 이 과정을 통해 이 논문은 이상주의적 정치철학의 대안으로 제시되는 자연주의적 정치철학이 과연 어떤 형태로 나아가야 하는지에 대한 암시를 얻고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Walzer’s political theory has been regarded as a kind of communitarian theory. This paper aims to suggest that his theory should be characterized not as a kind of communitarianism but a kind of anti-idealism and as an alternative to idealism. In order to work it out, I show that Walzer’s ideas can be traced to Hume’s political philosophy. By comparing Walzer and Hume, I draw the conclusion that Walzer’s alternative is better than Hume’s, because the former can overcome the problem of conservatism while the latter cannot.
First, I deal with the connection between Walzer and Hume, then survey each political theory, and show that both of them are characterized as projects rejecting idealistic political theories and suggesting a naturalistic account as an alternative to an idealistic one. Finally, by dealing with the conservative implications of their naturalistic projects, I clarify some differences between Walzer’s theory and Hume’s.
