The purposes of this study were to examine the effects of integrated art and science activities on young children's scientific problem-solving ability, and to provide basic data to increase their scientific problem-solving ability.
The research questions for this study are as follows:
1. What are the effects of integrated art and science activities on children's scientific problem-solving ability?
2. What are the effects of integrated art and science activities on children's scientific problem-solving ability according to gender?
The subjects of this study were 48 five-year-old children from P and M Kindergartens located in K city. They were randomly assigned to either experimental or comparative group.
To measure children's scientific problem-solving ability, Tegano, Sawyer, and Moran(1989)'s Scientific Problem Solving Skills Inventory which was translated, revised, and supplemented by Ahn, Gyeong-suk(1992) was used.
The research procedure consists of preliminary test, experiment, pre-test, experimental treatments, and post-test. The experiment was conducted for ten weeks from May 14 to July 19, 2007. A pre-test was given to test the homogeneity between the groups in terms of scientific problem-solving ability. The result showed no significant difference between the experimental group and comparative group. As for the experimental group, integrated activities of art and science activities were offered twice a week for 7 weeks, total 14 sessions. As fot the comparative group, each of art activity and science activity was offered once a week, 7sessions during the same period.
To examine the effects of this study, collected data from the pre- and post-test was analyzed in mean and standard deviation with the SPSS 14.0 program and t-tested for group difference and gender difference.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, it was proved that the experimental group showed its scientific problem-solving ability was more significant than the comparison group. Especially, in the sub-area of the discovery and statement of problems, suggestion and application of ideas about problem solving, and drawing a conclusion about problem solving, the experiment group obtained significantly higher scores than the comparison group. It means that the integrated activities of art and science for children had positive impacts on enhancing the children's scientific problem-solving ability.
Secondly, there was no significant gender difference among the children in the experiment group. No significant difference was also observed in the sub-areas of discovery and statement of problems, suggestion and application of ideas about problem solving, and drawing a conclusion about scientific problem-solving ability. It does not mean that the integrated activities of art and science for children had positive influence on the children's scientific problem-solving ability according to gender.
Consequently, the results of this study suggest that the teaching method of the integrated activities of art and science for children is more effective in early childhood educational field to increase children's scientific problem-solving ability than the separate activities of art and science.
