The use of passive voice in English is much rarer than that of active voice. However, if it is neglected in teaching, students would be at a great disadvantage because we cannot expect any correct and fluent English from them.
Let me explain to you why the passive voice is essential in using English. First, there are many cases in which the passive alone is used ; second, it enables us to use English in a variety of ways third, it helps us to make long sentences simpler than it is otherwise used.
However, there are many constraints when we apply the passive to the active, so , I have, with this in mind, surveyed the basic theoretical backgrounds of the passive voice, first to find out the reason why, and then its frequency appearing in text books. In chapter 2, 1 have examined the definition, the structures and the types of passive voice, paying great attention especially to the usage of get + passive.
In chapter 3, I have collected all the passive expressions appearing in two high school text books and a piece of drama " 'night Mother" and analyzed passive sentences, paying attention to their subjects, agents and usages along with their contexts and constraints.
In chapter 4, I have tried to come out with an idea how to teach the passive voice correctly and effectively, considering why students have difficulties and make frequent errors in using it.
In conclusion, the passive voice is an essential part of English grammar. If we neglect it in teaching English, whether spoken or written, the correct understanding and use of English by students cannot be expected at all.
