This study aims to examine the effects of Phone English Instruction (PEI)
on L2 speaking, L2 listening, changes of perception toward PEI, and
changes of affect such as confidence in speaking English. In order to
statistically investigate the effects of PEI, one near-native Korean speaker
of English was in charge of 25 students over five weeks. Before and after
the five weeks of the PEI treatment, the Versant Test was employed to
measure their L2 speaking proficiency, and a fifteen-minute-long TOEIC listening test was also administered. In addition, two major pre- and postsurvey
and five weekly surveys, along with five weekly surveys, were
administered. An analysis of variance with repeated measures was
performed to investigate whether the speaking test scores significantly
differed depending on time. The results revealed that the subjects’ L2
speaking proficiency significantly improved whereas their L2 listening
proficiency did not. Their change of affect in anxiety level, motivation to
speak English and interest in learning English showed no significant
changes. However, their change of affect in confidence in speaking
English showed significant improvements. Their change of perception
toward PEI showed no significant improvements. These findings imply
that a PE course of at least five weeks could be effective for improving
speaking proficiency, boosting confidence in speaking English, and
preparing for the speaking section in standardized English tests such as
OPIc and NEAT.
