      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The study is to find out the origin of the Korean ancient market which was called 「Si-Joung」(市井).
Research materials are Korean ancient records and existing ethnic customs. This is an approch to 「History-Ethnic Customs」.
First, Si(市) was an altar. 「Sin-Si」(神市) which is recorded in the Old Record of Dan-Goon(檀君古記) was an altar in the lower part of a divine tree. This was the place where 「Woong-Nyo」(態女) supplicated for pregnancy and got married to 「Whan-Woong」(桓雄). It was the place of theogamy.
「Han-Ki-Si」(韓岐市) where 「Kim-Yang」(金陽) hided himself was an asylum. And also it was 「So-Do」(蘇塗) which meant the place of Korean ancient sacrifice. Therefore 「Han-Ki-Si」 was the area with an altar.
The pictograph of Si(市) was the sacred robe. The Korean ethnic customs show the connection of a market and an altar, too. Altars were in many markets and there carried out sacrifices.
Second, in the Korean ancient well was set up an altar. The founder of Silla dynasty was born in a well. It means that around the well was set up an altar and were elected King and Queen in trust by water deity. So they were promoted in the well alter. And there was established a palace of deity(神宮) afterwards. Many kings holded memorial services for inauguration there. Besides King's death dynasty's downfall, crisis and prosperity were foretold at a well altar. And temple wells were the areas of sacredness, too. Moreover Korean existing ethnic preserves well exorcism, too.
As we have seen, a sacrifice was held at the altar of Si(市) and Joung(井). And that moment, many people gathered. So they exchanged ideas, informations and necessaries of living there. This is the figure of the Korean ancient market. Korean existing ethnic customs prove exorcism in a market, too.
The conclusion of this study is the Korean ancient market was established around an altar.
