콰인의 예정조화 = Quine on Preestablished Harmony

국문 초록 (Abstract)

20세기 철학의 한 지류로 등장한 논리경험론은 언어의 본성을 탐구함으로써 인간의 인식과 존재를 해명하려는 시도라 할 수 있다. 논리경험론의 완성자라고 알려져 있는 과인은 특히 언어적 표현의 '의미'를 비 의미론적 용어에 의거하여 설명하는 데 주력했다. 이 설명에 있어서 가장 핵심적인 문제는 의미의 상호주관성을 해명하는 것이다. 그런데 콰인은 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 인식주체들이 선천적으로 가지고 있는 지각유사성표준들의 예정조화를 도입한다. 이 글의 목적은 그가 어떤 탐구과정을 통해 이 예정조화를 주장하게 되었는지를 추적하는 것이다.
과인은 비언어적 신경유입에서 어떻게 언어적 의미가 생성될 수 있었는지 해명하기 위해, 먼저 신경유입에서 언어로 가는 중간다리로서 관찰문장을 도입한다. 그런 다음 그는 이 관찰문장들이 공유하고 있는 경험적 의미를 명시적으로 정의한다 관찰문장의 의미는 그것의 자극의미이다. 그리고 한 주체에게 어떤 한 문장의 자극의미란 현재의 신경유입에 응답하여 그 문장에 동의하거나 이의하는 그 주체의 성향이다. 과인에 의하면, 한 주체가 두 신경유입에 대해 유사하게 반응하곤 하는 것은 그 주체의 선천적 지각유사성표준 때문인데, 콰인의 예정조화설은 두 주체가 가진 지각유사성표준이 잘 맞추어진 시계처럼 조화롭게 작동한다는 논제이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Logical empiricism as one of trends of 20 century philosophy, can be thought as the attempt that, through inquiring logically and empirically into the nature of human language, tries to explicate the nature of his knowledge. W. V. Quine known as the last logical empiricist has concentrated on defining meanings of linguistic expressions in terms of nonsemantic one. In this definition, the most crucial problem is to establish the intersubjectivity of meanings. To solve this problem, Quine employes a preestablished harmony of standards of perceptual similarity. The aim of this paper is to trace the development of his inquires the terminal of which he has proposed this preestablished harmony.
In order to explaining how linguistic meanings can be emerged from nonliguistic neural intakes, Quine at first introduces holophrastic observational sentences as intermediary bridges between neural intakes and natural language. Then he explicitly defines the empirical meanings being shared by these observational sentences: the meaning of an observational sentence is just its stimulus-meaning. Here the stimulus-meaning of a sentence for a subject amounts to his disposition to assent to or dissent from the sentence in response to present neural intake. According to Quine, it is by virtue of subject's standard of perceptual similarity that the subject finds the similarity of two neural intakes, where standards of perceptual similarity are given in part innately in part by experience to each subject. Quine's preestablished harmony is the thesis that two standards of perceptual similarity of two subjects cooperate harmoniously just as two well-adjusted clocks.
