    ABSTRACT

Park Yong-man was born in 1881 in Cheolwon, Kangwon-do,
Korea, and murdered in 1928 in Peking, China. He dedicated his
entire life to the resistance of Japanese imperialism and the liberation
of Korea from Japanese colonization, working in Japan, the United
States, Russia, China as well as in Korea. He was exiled to the United
States in 1905 and, in preparation for a planned war of liberation, he
founded Hanin_Shoneunbeung hakou(Military School for Korean Youth)
in 1909, the first Korean military academy in history outside of Korea,
in the state of Nebraska, to train officers for an independence army.
In addition, in 1914, he established the Great Korea National Army
and the Korean Military Academy in the state of Hawaii, leading the
Korean community there to become the base of the Korean liberation
    movement.
While working in Hawaii, Park tirelessly collaborated with other
Korean independence activists in Korea, China and Russia. He
participated in Daehan GwangBokKun_Jeongbu(the Korean Liberation
Army government), Daedong Dangyeol_Seoneon(the Declaration of
Solidarity), Daehan Doklip Seoneon(the Declaration of Independence of
Korea) and also organized Chosun Kookmin Hoe (the Society of
    Korean Nation) inside Korea.
In May 1919, Park Yongman went from Hawaii to Vladivostok,
Russia, where he was initially appointed as the first secretary general
for foreign matters in the provisional government at the time. Yet he
declined the office because he was opposed to the interim
government’s diplomacy-oriented strategy for the independence
movement and he wanted to maintain a militant anti-Japanese policy.
In April 1920, Park discussed with Moon Changbum on merging
Korean armies, and he led the Koonsa Tongil Hoeeui(the Conference
for Military Unification). Park agreed with the Chinese Revolution
government and the USSR government to set out Choongnoh Yeonhap
Seonjeon-bu(a Propaganda Union for China and Russia) and took the
role as second leader. Park also cooperated with Kim Gyuheung in
an effort to organize the Heunghwa Shilup Unhaeng(Heunghwa
Industrial Bank) in Peking for the purpose of securing a supply of
funds for the independence movement. He simultaneously started a
farmer-soldier system in Sukkyung mountain. Though the youth of
various organizations including Euiyeol-dan tried to raise funds for the
bank and the farm in Korea, the Heunghwa bank went out of business and the farm in Sukkyung mountain also had to close.
Undaunted, Park worked with China's military clique Féng Yùxiáng
(馮玉祥) to establish a Korean zone in the frontier, and he then
visited Korea in January 1924 as a secret envoy of Féng Yùxiáng(馮
玉祥) to contact the Japanese governor -general in order to resolve
Japanese interference in China. This resulted in a split among Korean
independence activists into those who believed that Park betrayed
Korea and those who still trusted him.
Park later worked with An Changho and Moon Changbum on
opening another bank and stayed in Hawaii for a year, but he failed
to make any significant progress. Returning to Peking, he collaborated
with Yan Xishan(閻錫山) in founding another Korean military
academy. He wrote articles on the importance of the Korean alphabet
and published textbooks to teach the Korean language In 1928,
however, right before the establishment of a Korean military
academy, he was killed by two Korean young men in his own house
    in Peking, China.
Park was a great leader in the Korean independence movement in
China as well as in the States and Hawaii, and he pursued Korean
liberation until the last day of his life.
