Korean thought and linguistic culture have been under the influence of Chinese Confucian ideas for a long time. For over six hundred years since the foundation of the Chosun Dynasty in the 14th century, many Korean scholars have thought that not only gestures but also speech are of less value under the influence of Confucianism. Even today most Koreans people do not use many effective means of nonverbal communication. Non-verbal communication, such as body language like hand gestures. etc., can be much more immediate and informative than verbal means in understanding each other between people from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. According to the necessity and the development of many effective means of the communication, non-verbal communication also can be recognized and its many kinds of divergent gestures can be made and used. Therefore, it is necessary for language learners to know the methods of non-verbal communication in the language community. Judging from the honorific expression for the honorification of the hearer and the selfs politeness in Korean since old Korean, we can find the fact that Korean language etiquettes verbal and nonverbal have been developed. There is close correlation between Gesture and Speech as means of communication. They play their own complementary roles mutually for the effective communication. We can find speaker's visual fidelity, familiarity, and economical expression through the simple gestures, non-verbal communication of the daily life.
