제주에서 사회학하기 -사회학의 존재이유 되찾기 = Doing Sociology in Jeju-Reclaiming Raison d`etre of Sociology

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper discusses how to overcome the crisis of sociology. The crisis of sociology, which was recently surfaced, is an over-determined expression of the fundamental defects of Korean sociology as a passively transplanted discipline together with the economic, political, and social crises at the global level. However, the fact that this multiple crises are experienced as a crisis of sociology is paradoxical. From the outset, sociology was the result of rapid social change, and have developed through diagnosing the crises, prescribing them, and intervening into the real world with the theoretical ideas stemming from diagnosis and prescription. In this context, the claim that the crisis must be overcome by distancing sociology from the reality, which could be believed to keep pure academism, misunderstand cause of the crisis. In order to demonstrate that this position is wrong, this paper tries to show that the history of sociological thinking has been the outcomes of incessant dialogues and tensions between theory and reality. Then, we can have an opportunity in which we criticise the narrowly defined idea of positivist science and reflect on the modern purposive rationality. The critique and reflection provided by the history of sociological thinking encourage us to think that a marginal position rather than a central one could give an advantage in overcoming the crisis. In conclusion, this paper argues that, when Jeju as a concrete place encounters the theoretical resources given by the sociological critique and reflection, new (theoretical) practice can emerge. The universal ground of the raison d`etre of sociology can be reclaimed through exploring Jeju`s particularity.
