새터민 유아 3명의 유치원 적응과정과 놀이의 특징 : 입국 초기 하나원 시기를 중심으로 = (The) kindergarten adaptation process and play features of three North Korean children defectors : a focus on their initial settlement period in the Hanawon

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study was to look into the kindergarten adaptation process and features in play themes of three North Korean children defectors(Saeteomin children). For this purpose, the following questions were presented.
1. How is the kindergarten adaptation process of the three Saeteomin children?
2. What features are present in the three Saeteomin children's play themes?
The participants of this study were three Saeteomin children who attended Peace Kindergarten during their initial settlement period at the Hanawon. A qualitative case study methodology had been used for this study. The study was conducted from March 3, 2009 to June 30, 2009. Data collection was carried out via participant observations, interviews with the participant children, other South Korean children, teacher, participant children’s mothers, and document collection. Collected documents were analyzed according to the following stages: data transcription, data categorization and case description.
For each question presented, the study results were as follows. First, participant children became accustomed to the physical environment, daily routine and rules, and with regard to the adaptation process, Saeteomin children showed varied aspects when relating with other children. With time, they became further active as they adapted to the process of learning from teacher, but their respective degree of understanding different activities was varied.
Second, participant children played with various play themes such as cell phone, prison, police, birthday party, transportation and household. Such plays reflected their experience of life in North Korea and their defection, and were also an expression of newly experienced South Korean culture. Depending on the play themes, they played by themselves or with other South Korean children.
The cross case study for this study revealed the following results. First, all participant children experienced differences in the political system, culture and language. Such differences factored in as obstacles to the children's adaptation process and also influenced their play.
Second, participant children lived an ordinary life before entering South Korea. Experience of ordinary life enriched the education process, but the children regarded their past experience as something they had to abandon.
Third, Peace Kindergarten was temporally and spatially important. Peace Kindergarten was where Saeteomin children convey North Korean culture and also their experience in other countries, learn South Korean culture and it was also where inter-Korean cultural exchange occured. In addition, it was where children could express negative emotions and earn confidence.
Fourth, there existed differences in the participant children's life in North Korea and their defection/escape routes. Prior experience in North Korea's educational institutions for children revealed differences in children's adaptation speed. There were also individual differences in the children's feelings and emotional expressions regarding the duration, experience and process of their defection from North Korea. With age, the older children were more conscious of their defection process, and this was reflected in their adaptation process.
Fifth, participant children were of different age, sex and character. Each harbored different levels of understanding and language fluency, and came from varied family backgrounds. Such aspects diversified their adaptation processes and play.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 새터민 유아 3명의 유치원 적응과정과 놀이 주제에 따른 놀이의 특징에 대해 알아보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이러한 연구목적에 따른 연구문제는 다음과 같다.
1. 새터민 유아 3명의 유치원 적응과정은 어떠한가?
2. 새터민 유아 3명이 놀이 주제에 따라 보이는 놀이의 특징은 어떠한가?
본 연구의 참여 유아는 하나원 시기 평화유치원에 다녔던 3명의 새터민 유아이다. 연구 방법으로는 질적 사례연구방법을 사용하였다. 연구 기간은 2009년 3월 3일부터 6월 30일까지로, 참여관찰, 참여 유아 면담, 일반 유아 면담, 교사 면담, 참여 유아의 어머니 면담을 실시하였고, 문서를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료는 자료의 전사, 범주화, 사례 기술하기 단계를 거쳐 분석하였다.
본 연구 결과를 연구 문제에 따라 제시하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 참여 유아들은 시간이 지남에 따라 물리적 환경, 일과행동, 규칙에 익숙해졌고, 또래관계의 적응과정에서 일반 유아들과 새터민 유아들과의 관계 양상이 다양했다. 이들은 교사와의 배움의 적응과정에서 시간이 지날수록 활동을 잘하게 되었지만 이해하는 정도가 다양했다.
둘째, 참여 유아들은 핸드폰 놀이, 감옥 놀이, 경찰 놀이, 생일축하 놀이, 교통수단 놀이, 가정생활 놀이 등을 하였다. 이들은 놀이 속에서 재북 경험과 탈북 과정을 반영하였고, 새롭게 알게 된 국내 문화에 대해서도 표현했다. 놀이 주제에 따라 새터민 유아와만 놀기도 했고, 일반 유아와 놀기도 하였다.
본 연구의 사례 간 분석을 통해 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 참여 유아들은 모두 체제와 문화 언어의 , 차이를 경험하고 있었는데 이는 이들의 유치원 적응과정의 어려움으로 작용하였고 놀이에 영향을 미쳤다.
둘째, 참여 유아들은 입국 전에 평범한 일상이 있었다. 일상생활의 경험은 교육과정에 풍성함을 더해주었지만 이들은 이러한 과거 경험을 버려야 할 것으로 생각했다.
셋째, 평화유치원은 시공간적으로 중요한 곳이었다. 평화유치원은 새터민 유아들이 가지고 온 북한 및 제3국 문화를 전달하는 곳이었고, 새로운 국내문화를 배우는 곳이었으며, 남북한 문화의 교류가 일어나는 곳이었다. 또한 이곳을 통해 유아들은 부정적인 감정을 표출하고, 자신감을 얻어갔다.
넷째, 참여 유아들은 재북 경험과 탈북 과정에 차이가 있었다. 북한에서 사전 유아교육기관 경험 유무는 적응 속도에 차이를 가져왔다. 탈북 기간, 탈북 경험, 탈북 과정에 대해 개인이 느끼는 감정과 감정에 대한 표현에도 차이가 있었다. 연령이 높을수록 탈북 과정을 의식하고 적응과정에서 이를 반영했다.
다섯째, 참여 유아들은 연령과 성, 성격, 이해력, 언어의 유창성 정도가 다양했으며, 다양한 가정 배경이 있었다. 이는 적응과정과 놀이의 특징을 다양하게 했다.
