The purpose of this study is to provide a specific educational plan of ‘Yo’ to improve communication skills of Korean learners. Korean textbooks used at most university institute centers are not clearly showing the formal, syntactic, and discourse functions of ‘Yo’ studied in this paper. For this reason, foreign learners may feel embarrassed or uncomfortable with their conversation partners. Because they can not use ‘Yo’ properly. Therefore, it is necessary to present the grammatical characteristics of ‘Yo’ which are not presently presented, and to discuss it distinctly.
It is important because the Korean postposition ‘Yo’ is a grammatical element that conveys the meaning of exaltation in the situation of Korean discourse emphasizing the relationship between the speaker and the listener. In addition, because it has diverse communicative functions, teaching and learning should be done to foreign learners. Therefore, it is expected that the communication ability of foreign learners can be improved by explicitly presenting the various situations in which ‘Yo’ is combined to learners.
In this study, we analyzed the Korean textbooks used by the university institutions to clarify the necessity. As a result, the grammatical, syntactic, and discourse characteristics of the Korean postposition ‘Yo’ were not reflected in the Korean textbooks. For foreigners studying Korean in Korea, most of them learn Korean at university institutions in Korea. Therefore, each institution needs to reflect this.
If we reflect this in the actual Korean language education classroom, we expect that it will be able to enhance the communication ability of foreign learners. In this study, the content of ‘Yo’ is divided into beginner, intermediate, and advanced. In the elementary education method, ‘Hae-Yo’ and ‘Hae’ were compared. It is emphasized that it is possible to combine with various termination endings. In addition, it suggests that the intermediate education method can be combined with the connection ending in comparison with the elementary education contents. In addition, it suggests that ‘Yo’ can be combined with several preceding components. It is used repeatedly and used as a talkative. And at the advanced level, it was not only about using ‘Yo’ at the level of everyday conversation, but also for developing the speaking strategy. For this purpose, it was suggested that it could be used as a speaking strategy when talking about his/her thoughts in a conference situation. It is also important to note that repeated use of the word, as learned at the intermediate level, can give the impression of hesitation
Lastly, it is expected that the teaching method presented in this study will be applied in practice, and the foreign language learners' ability to communicate in Korean will be improved.
