Benign hemophagocytic syndrome is usually associated with systemic viral infection and occasionally occurs with bacterial, fungal and protozoal infections. In our knowlege, hemophagocytic syndrome associated with scrub typhus has not been prevously reported.
We experienced a case of rickttsia-asssociated pancytopenia and hemophagocytosis in a 22-year old man who admitted to our hospital for high fever, chill, myalgia, and abdominal pain. It was speculated that scrub typhus may be one of the causes of benign hemophagocytic syndrome.
