An integrated computer simulation program was developed to predict mobility and tractive performance of tracked off-road vehicle. Input variables for the simulation involve the parameters about soil conditions and vehicle with engine/transmission characteristics. The simulation predicts soil thrust and motion resistance for the tractive performance index. For the mobility index, the simulation predicts a time-distance and time-speed relationship, maximum speed and whether go or no go for a given vehicle.
A typical simulation result showed that M60AI Tank was not able to move on Hope Valley snow due to the greater motion resistance than the tractive force. It also showed that M60AI Tank could move at the maximum speed of 48 km/h on Clay soil and traveled 750 m in 70 seconds after starting.
