종교적 기부 및 상호부조적 기부와 자선적 기부의 관계에 대한 탐색적 연구: 다양한 형태의 기부행동 간 연관성 분석 = An Empirical Exploration on Secular Giving: Analysis on Relationships with Religious Giving and Mutual Aid Giving

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 종교적 기부 및 상호부조적 기부가 자선적 기부와 어떠한 연관성을 갖는지 실증적으로 검증함으로써 기부에 대한 실증적 지식의 확장에 필요한 기초 자료를 마련하고자 하는 목적을 갖는다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 한국인의 기부행동에 관한 대표적 자료인 아름다운 재단의 Giving Korea 2010 자료를 분석하여 세 가지 형태의 기부행동 간 관계에 대한 이해 기반을 제공하고자 한다. 종교적 기부 및 상호부조적 기부와 자선적 기부의 연관성을 검증하기 위해 규모와 노력이라는 측정방식을 활용하여 토 빗 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 분석결과, 종교적 기부규모는 자선적 기부규모와 통계적으로 유의한 수준에서 정적 연관성을 갖지만, 상호부조적 기부규모는 유의한 연관성을 갖지 않는 것으로 나타난다. 그리고 종교적 기부규모와 상호부조적 기부규모의 상호작용은 부적 방향에서 연관성을 갖는 것으로 나타난다. 한편 소득에 대비한 기부의 수준인 기부노력을 통해 측정했을 때는 종교적 기부노력 및 상호부조적 기부노력 각각은 자선적 기부노력과 통계적으로 유의한 수준에서 정적 연관성을 갖는 것으로 나타난다. 그리고 기부규모를 통한 분석에서와 마찬가지로 종교적 기부노력과 상호부조적 기부노력의 상호작용은 자선적 기부노력과 부적 방향에서 연관성을 갖는 것으로 나타난다. 이러한 결과는 종교적 기부 및 상호부조적 기부 각각은 자선적 기부와 보완적 관계 (complementary relationship)를 형성하는 경향이 있지만, 종교적 기부와 상호부조적 기부가 결합적으로 증가되는 경우에는 자선적 기부와 대체적 관계(substitutive relationship)를 형성할 수 있음을 시사해 준다. 대부분의 종교는 친사회적 행동을 장려하고 기부의 책임을 강조하며 실천을 동기화하기 때문에 종교적 기부의 규모와 강도가 크고 강한 사람들은 자선적 기부에서도 역시 그러한 경향을 갖는 것으로 추정된다. 사회적 관계망을 바탕으로 한 상호부조적 기부의 경우에는 공동체 의식에 기반한 나눔실천의 확장이라는 기제가 발현되어 자신과 무관할 수 있는 타인을 배려하고 돌보는 행동으로까지, 즉 자선적 기부행동으로까지 연계되어지는 것으로 추정해 볼 수 있다. 한편, 종교적 기부와 상호부조적 기부 간의 상호작용 효과는 종교적 기부와 상호부조적 기부가 결합적으로 증가되어지는 경우 자선적 기부에 대한 자원 할당이 상대적으로 줄어드는 경향이 있음을 시사해 주는데, 이에 대해서는 지속적인 연구가 필요하다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study is targeted to understand citizens` secular giving in the relationship with religious giving and mutual aid giving. It explores core predictors of secular giving which is measured by absolute amount and effort(share of giving by household income) by focusing on religious giving, mutual aid giving, and their interaction with controlling for significant variables such as demographic variables and volunteering. For the analysis, this study utilizes the data called "Giving Korea 2010" by the Center on Philanthropy of the Beautiful Foundation and employs Tobit regression model to correct sample selection bias. The findings show that (1) religious giving amount(+) and interaction between religious giving amount and mutual aid giving amount(-) have statistically significant effects on citizens` secular giving amount and (2) religious giving effort(+), mutual aid giving effort(+), and interaction between religious giving effort and mutual aid giving effort(-) have statistically significant effects on citizens` secular giving effort. The findings show that there are complementary relationship between religious giving and secular giving in terms of amount and effort and there could be complementary relationship between mutual aid giving and secular giving in terms of effort. In addition, it shows that there can be substitutive relationship between these giving and secular giving when religious giving and mutual aid giving are practiced simultaneously Indeed, the findings implies that there should be continuous research on different types of giving behaviors. This study has made a start in a new area of inquiry attempting to explain diverse giving behaviors of citizens in different cultural backgrounds with broadening and promoting understanding on Koreans` giving behaviors. Moreover, it raises an implication for policy development to mobilize secular resources.
