For a safe operation of HVDC systems, the fault location and clearance of faults in the HVDC cables are important. In the past, search coil method and murray loop methods are mainly used for the fault location. But the results of these methods depend On existence of assistance cables and fault resistance and broken cables. The environment of fault location also affects the result of the fault location. To complement these problems, in this paper, fault location method using traveling wave and cross correlation is proposed for HVDC cable faults. In other words, the times those are the instants of the first incident and the second incident are found by using cross correlation. And fault location is calculated by using the difference time of two incidents and a velocity of the traveling wave. For case study, HVDC cable system modeling is accomplished by EMTDC/PSCAD and the algorithms are developed by using Matlab V7.1 and microsoft visual C++. To acquisite the fault data, IEC 61850 based IEDs are constructed. In this system, the proposed algorithm is implemented and verified by using the fault data that can be acquisited from IEC 61850 based IED.
