I would like to address the world of Park, Geun-Hyung(1963)’s work, who is a playwright as well as a director, through a view of Deconstruction on this thesis. The Deconstruction, advocated by a French philosopher, Derrida, is a sort of concept which dissolve the existing dichotomy, leading rediscovery viewpoints, structures or hypothesis which can be a base on building some sorts of beliefs and thoughts. So far in Korean theatre, the Deconstruction has been discussed mainly in reconstructing plot, however, the Deconstructive theatre should break the existing dichotomy up. Park is a distinctive playwright who has been showing our diversified postmodern lives through his Deconstructive writing strategies.
The playwritings of Park are mainly based on three branches of themes: patriarchy, love and history. He presents whole new view of fathers, love, and history which is quite different from the existing concept.
Fathers in Park’s playwritings break our conventional concept of fathers.
The fathers in <Mice> and <Threesome> do not appear on stages, though, they appeal their presences through the memories of family members and objects which remind them, which dissolve boundaries of presence/ non-presence. Also, the fathers in <Ode to youth>, <Home> throw away their bossy positions in their families and make themselves even with other family members, leading destructions of a family hierarchy and a boarder of center/edge. <Shovel or Ax>, <The Poop of Ghost> and <Don’t be Too shocked> show us powerless fathers, who are eager to rule their families, but have no influence on their family members, and are alienated from them and substituted with others.
Park also suggests a new concept of love which dissolves the social norms. He tells us scary and spooky love stories which deconstruct the dichotomies of egoisms/altruisms, purities/lusts, and salvations/deaths in his plays such as <The Story of Blue Stars>, <There is no one breathing under water>.
As well as, Park has a distinctive view in history. <Chun-Yang 1991>, <Aspirin> reveal individualized concept of history destroying a dichotomy between progress and regress. Similarly, <Generation after>, <Gyung-Suk, and her father> show personalized view of history that breaks a dichotomy between affirmation and negation, and <At the dock> and <In Back-Mu Dong> has symbolic views of history which tear a dichotomy between existence and non-existence.
With his unusual perspectives in fathers, love and history, Park throws thousands of questions to the readers (or the audiences), and also help them rediscover meanings of their own lives. Usually, fathers are described relatively cooler than mothers. Somewhat grotesque and shocking father figures in Park’s plays open a new horizon of a father-son relationship. And his quite creepy and hideous love perspectives cast lots of pities to the pathetic characters in his pieces who cling to very obsessive love. Meanwhile, he suggests a death as a last resort to the characters with no means of lives, so he tells the readers how terrible their lives are. Lastly, history in his pieces has no consistency, but distorted, disconnected or full of unpredictable facts, so they are too hard for readers to sense at once, building their untouchable presences. Surprisingly, the messages he wants to cast to the readers are quite simple; ‘Love your father’, ‘Love is needed’, and ‘History matters.’However, he uses the Deconstructive writing strategies to help the readers reach the messages by themselves, giving the readers much more deep emotion.
Park has characteristic writing skills which itself has also the Deconstructive tendency. There are no boundaries between realism and non-realism in his writings. We cannot say his writings belong to any of these. Rather than that, we should say his playwritings are affiliated to ““the third””.
Park chooses to show ordinary people’s everyday lives plainly, which could be said as realismor hyper-realism. However, when we watch his plays, we cannot describe them without mentioning minimalism, because he, as a director, uses minimum stage designing, scene directing, and characters in the plays say as little lines as they can, and there’re not much describing about the relationships of family members. It means audience should fulfill the empty spaces and reach to the author’s messages by themselves. At last, audiences realize there are big black holes in our lives which consume all the conflicts of our daily lives that the author describes with plots of absurdities and coincidences. These facts tell us his pieces have non- realistic features. His writings are quite grotesque and twisty and audiences find that the present is only a continuation of the past, and that the present itself disappears. Eventually, Park opens up the world of uncertainty in which objectivities don’t matter anymore but only the author’s own viewpoints are surviving, and in which all the possibilities and diversified options can come true and also about which the audiences can have their individualized interpretations. Addition to these, the space where reality and dreams - which could penetrate reality easily - are mixed evokes a surrealistic imagination and shows a representation of unconsciousness. With these writing strategies, Park, Geun-Hyungexpresses his own unique and sensual point of viewsmore effectively and vividly.
