As the smallest unit in the composition of any melody, motive forms the basis for melodic tunes and establishes a starting point for any creation. Among other melody composition methods, how to form a motive, change it, and refine it to develop a solo is important in playing solos, and in an impromptu jazz solo, analyzing how motive is changed and developed and using it can be a method or idea to approach a more melodic solo.
This thesis consists of a thorough analysis of the kinds of developmental methods that were used to change and advance motives in four solos by Larry Grenadier, a musician who is active with creative ideas in many genres of contemporary jazz music. After such analysis, these motive development methods were applied to a rendition and recording of one original song and three jazz songs.
A study on the motive development of jazz bass solo by Larry Grenadier has led to the following conclusions:
First, motive development methods were used from the very start of the introduction in solos or in the introduction before the next chorus.
Second, in the songs that were analyzed, motive development methods such as repetition, rhythmic retention/pitch Change, sequence, extension, truncation, and rhythmic displacement were commonly used during solos, whereas inversion, thinning, and permutation were only used in some of them and had no big effect on solo development.
Third, the primary development methods that were used to change motive were repetition, rhythmic retention/pitch change, sequence and permutation, with variations made to the motive's rhythm by means of truncation or extension, thinning, and rhythm replacement.
As the third conclusion above suggests, removing monotony that is caused by repeated phrases and taking away the looseness that is due to variations in solos can be a way of developing an organic solo. Regarding solo development, applying the motive development methods found in this study can be a way or idea to approach more melodic solos.
Since judgment was used in the motive development methods mentioned in the introduction, elements in the methods that appeared to be motives but were impossible to analyze were excluded from the analysis, therefore making it one limitation of this study. There will be a need for future studies to overcome this limitation.
