과학기술에 관한 윤리적 규범 모색을 위한 철학적 사회학적 신학적 관점에서의 융합적 연구 = 엘륄(Jacques Ellul)의 기술 이해에 대한 비판적 성찰과 트랜스휴머니즘에 대한 적용을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

특이점이나 트랜스휴머니즘으로 대표되는 미래의 인간과 세계 구상에 대해 기독교 신앙은 어떻게 응답할 것인가? 현대 과학기술 문명의 의미를 비평적으로 성찰한 대표적인 기독교 사상가를 꼽으라면, 엘륄(Jacques Ellul)을 생각할 수 있을 것이다. 엘륄은 현대 과학기술 문명에 관한 비평서들에 이미 ‘기술의 종교화’의 가능성과 그 확장성에 대해 예민하게 파악하며 철학적으로, 사회학적으로, 신학적으로 또 윤리적으로 응답을 시도하였다. 엘륄은 자신의 기술 문명에 대한 비평서인 『기술 체계』에서 엘륄은 현대사회에 과학기술이 종교성을 띠고 있다고 진단하면서, 어떻게 그러한 종교성을 벗겨낼 수 있는지에 대해 진지하게 묻는다. 『기술 체계』를 비롯한 몇 권의 저서를 통해 엘륄은 현대 과학기술에 내재된 몇 가지 주된 본성적 특징들을 자동성(혹은 선택의 자동성), 자기확장성(혹은 자기창조성), 통합성, 보편성, 자율성 등으로 제시한다. 기술은 스스로 창조의 잠재력(혹은 능력)을 가지며 스스로를 변화시키고 확장할 수 있고 또 그렇게 하고 있다. 기술은 인간 사회를 구성하는 여러 요소 가운데 하나의 지위에 머물지 않고, 다른 요소들과 결정적 관계성을 형성하고 또 제 요소들을 통합하는 핵심적 지위를 차지한다. 엘륄은 기술의 이러한 특징들을 일종의 ‘종교성’으로 파악하고 있으며, 현대사회의 과학기술이 갖는 이러한 종교성을 기독교 신앙의 관점에서 비판적으로 바라보고 있다. 과학기술이 인간의 삶과 문명에 미칠 영향에 관한 미래 전망뿐 아니라 현재 과학기술이 갖고 있는 강력하고 또 광범위한 영향을 고려할 때, 과학기술의 본질에 관한 신학적 윤리적 탐구는 필요한 학문적 실천적 과제가 될 것이다. 이에 필자는 본 연구를 통해 신학적 관점뿐 아니라 철학적 사회학적 관점도 적절하게 고려하는 일종의 융합적 접근을 취함으로써 좀 더 균형 잡힌 규범적 결론에 이르고자 하며 또 그렇게 산출된 규범을 트랜스휴머니즘과 같은 중요한 과학기술 논제에 적용함으로써 규범의 실제적 타당성을 검토하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

How should and can Christian faith respond to the future of human beings and their world that is anticipatorily described as one of singularity and transhumanism. Ellul is arguably one of the most critical thinkers who are eager to discuss the meaning of humankind’s technological civilization. Noting the possibility of ‘religionization of technology’ in modern history, he attempts to respond to the possibility and its actualization philosophically, sociologically, theologically and ethically in his critical books on technology. While he maintains that technology retains religious nature in itself in his book Technological System, he simultaneously questions how we can strip away the religious nature from technology. Ellul defines automaticity, selfcreativity, integration, universality and autonomy as essential features of contemporary technology in several books including Technological System. Technology has its own creative power and transforms itself with the power. It is not simply one of the various elements that constitute human societies, but plays the crucial role so that it unifies the elements. In short, Ellul sees religious nature in these features and tries to criticize such religionization in terms of Christian faith. Considering powerful and comprehensive influences scientific technology has had and will have on human life and civilization, it becomes a necessary task of ours to do theological and ethical inquiries of the nature of scientific technology. In this study, I attempt to take an integrated approach in a way that honors philosophical and sociological perspectives as well as a theological one. In doing this, I will suggest ethical norms that can illumine our reflection on scientific technology, with particular attention to the validity of the norms to such practical issues as transhumanism.
