자서전적 글쓰기와 시간의 문제 = 로렌 아이슬리의 『그 모든 낯선 시간들』 읽기

국문 초록 (Abstract)

많은 자서전 작가들은 죽음의 음울한 그림자를 예감하면서 인간적 시간을 넘어서기 위해 시간의 문제에 강하게 집착한다. 그리하여 자서전적 글쓰기는 시간과의 필사적인 싸움이라 할 수 있다. 진화론자인 로렌 아이슬리는 이러한 면에서 하나의 전범을 보여준다. 공식적 자서전 『그 모든 낯선 시간들: 어떤 생의 발굴』?에서 그는 어떻게 자신이 과학계의 ‘이단아’로서, 또한 자연작가로서 진화해왔는가를 자기 ‘생의 발굴’을 통해 드러낸다. 이 책에서 그의 주된 관심사는 과거의 삶이 어떠한 모습으로 현재적 의식과 무의식 속에 담겨 있는가를 보여주는 것이다. 그 과정에서 그는 지난 삶의 폐허라 할 수 있는 기억이 자서전적 글쓰기를 통해 바로 그의 현재적 자아와 미래적 자아를 형성함을 깨닫는다. 그는 자서전적 글쓰기를 통해 과거의 삶의 ‘화석’들을 탐사함으로써 점진적으로 현재적 자아와 미래적 자아를 만들어나간다. 그 과정에서 그의 정체성은 언제나 인간적 시간의 한계에 대한 의식과 복잡하게 뒤얽혀 있다. 자신의 생을 발굴한 후에 그는 마침내 인간의 삶이 끊임없는 생명 에너지의 흐름에 불과함을 깨닫는다. 그는 자신을 단지 인간의 종에 가두는 한계를 넘어서서 여타 생명체들과의 통합의 비전을 갖고자 하며, 인간 진화의 머나먼 시원으로 회귀하여 인간적 시간의 한계를 뛰어넘고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Most autobiographers are deeply obsessed with time, feeling the gloomy shadow of death and desiring to go beyond human time. Autobiographical writing is, therefore, a kind of desperate struggle with time. Loren Eiseley, moreover as an evolutionist, offers an outstanding model in this case. His official autobiography, All the Strange Hours, is an excavation of his own life, revealing how he has evolved in his personal history both as a "heretic" scientist and as a nature writer. In this book, his major concerns are on investigating and analyzing the way how things of his past life are contained in his present consciousness and subconsciousness. He realizes that the memories, in a sense, the ruins of past life, are shaped into his present and future self by autobiographical writing.
Throughout this book, he progressively probes into his past life "fossils" and formulate what he is and what he shall be. His self-identity is always complexively related with his consciousness of the limitation of human time. After excavating his own life, he finally reaches the conclusion that human life is just an incessant flow of life energy, like all the other creatures". He tries to go beyond the limitation to confine us to mere human species and get a vision to merge into other creatures, returning to our ancient evolutionary beginning, and thus surmounting the limit of human time.
