외환위기 전후의 은행산업효율성 비교에 관한 연구 = Analyzing Efficiency in the Banking Industry Before and After the Korean Financial Crisis

This study has measured efficiency of Korean commercial banks for the period 1996-2000 based on input and output-based DEA model developed by Banker, Charnes, and Cooper(1984), and examined the efficiency implications of Korean commercial bank mergers triggered by financial crisis and subsequent financial restructuring over the period 1997-1998. To address these issues, this study has employed two DEA models. The one is output-oriented DEA model based on intermediation approach, the other is input-oriented DEA using production approach.
In conclusion, this thesis has explored (i) change in efficiency of Korean banks between pre-period and post-period of 1997 financial crisis, (ii) difference in efficiency between nationwide banks and regional banks, (iii) difference in efficiency between merged banks and non-merged banks, (iv) the effect of contextual variables (such as number of branches, the level of automation, the proportion of equity holding by the government, etc.) on operating efficiency of banks. Finally, We expect future research to investigate the dynamic change in productivity over time in the Korean banking industry by using richer panel data and Malmquist productivity index.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 우리나라 외환위기(IMF 구제금융) 전후를 포함한 1997년부터 2000년까지의 기간을 대상으로 각 은행의 구조조정이 은행산업의 효율성을 향상시켰는지에 대하여 조직의 효율성 측정 방법론인 자료포괄분석(DEA：Data Envelopment Analysis)의 BCC모형을 이용하여 분석하였다. 즉, 외환위기 전후의 투입기준 효율성과 산출기준 효율성의 변화를 측정하고, 시중은행과 지방은행간의 효율성 차이가 있는지, 합병은행과 비합병은행간의 효율성 차이가 있는지를 분석하였으며, 각 은행의 자동화수준, 지점 수, 정부 출자지분이 효율성 향상에 미치는 영향을 고찰하였다.
연구결과, 외환위기를 거치면서 은행의 효율성은 개선되었으며, 투입기준 효율성이 산출기준 효율성보다 크게 향상된 것으로 나타났다. 산출기준 효율성은 지방은행이 더 효율적이고 투입기준 효율성은 시중은행이 더 효율적인 것으로 나타나, 시중은행이 지방은행보다 효율적일 것이라는 가설과 상반된 결과를 나타냈다. 또한, 합병은행의 효율성이 비합병은행의 효율성보다 높은 것으로 나타났다. 자동화 수준은 효율성에 미치는 영향이 적어 예상과는 다른 결과를 나타냈다. 정부의 출자지분은 각 은행의 효율성에 미치는 영향이 크며, 출자지분이 높을수록 비효율적으로 분석되었다.
