이성과 믿음의 관계에 대한 하만과 칸트의 견해 = 흄의 딜레마에 대한 대응을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

요한 게오르그 하만은 칸트의 평생의 친구였을 뿐만 아니라 칸트철학과 계몽주의의 강력한 비판자였다. 이 논문은 하만과 칸트의 종교철학, 보다 구체적으로는 이성과 믿음의 관계에 대한 두 철학자의 견해를 흄이 『인간본성에 대한 논고』에서 주장한 이성과 믿음 사이의 딜레마에 대한 두가지 다른 대응방식으로 이해하려고 시도한다. 흄이 이성과 믿음 사이에 딜레마가 있다고 본 이유는 이성을 따를 때 우리는 회의주의에 빠질 수밖에 없고, 반대로 믿음을 따를 때는 아무런 이성적 근거가 없는 믿음을 받아들일 수밖에 없기 때문이다. 이 딜레마에 대한 하만의 대응방식은 이성적 회의주의를 인간이 도달할 종국의 단계가 아니라 단지 믿음의 도약을 위한 전단계로 간주하는 것이다. 하만과는 달리 칸트는 이성과 믿음 사이의 중도의 길을 모색하며, 그 결과로서 칸트는 이성적 믿음을 옹호한다. 필자의 의견으로 대상에 대한 이론적 관심이 아니라 인간의 실천적 관심, 즉 도덕적 인간이 자신의 의무로서 최고선을 추구하는 것이 어떻게 가능한가에 대한 탐구 결과인 칸트의 이성적 믿음은 하만이 주장하고 있는 이성을 넘어선 믿음의 확실성에는 도달하지 못한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 칸트의 이성적 믿음은 이성을 갖고 있는 모든 인간이 도달할 수 있는 믿음이라는 점에서 보편성을 가질 수 있고, 따라서 이성적 회의주의에 빠지기를 원하지 않고 또한 이성을 포기하는 것도 원하지 않는 인간에게 대안이 될 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Johann Georg Hamann, one of Kant"s closest friends, was also a severe critic of Kant"s Critical philosophy and the Enlightenment. In this essay I have shown that their views on the relation between reason and belief can be seen as two different responses to the dilemma between reason and belief that is found in Hume"s philosophy. In his Treatise of Human Nature, Hume claims that there is a dilemma between reason and belief. That is, if we choose to follow reason, we inevitably lead to total skepticism; however, if we choose to follow belief, we cannot but accept beliefs which do not have any rational ground. Hamann"s solution to this dilemma is to regard the rational skepticism as a preparatory step, which should finally proceed to the stage of the leap of belief. However, unlike Hamann, Kant attempts to steer a middle path between a rational skepticism and an irrational leap of belief, and the result is his doctrine of rational belief. In my view, Kant"s rational belief, which is based on the practical reflection on the conditions under which a moral person can pursue the highest good as his duty, does not reach the absolute certainty of Hamann"s irrational belief. Nonetheless, Kant"s rational belief has the merit of being accessible to every human being who has reason. Therefore, it can be a choice for those who do not want to fall into skepticism but still want to trust human reason.
