In this paper, we design a model which makes use of the ATM OAM function in order to support the traffic control functions. To implement the model, we propose a scheme, which combines the performance management QAM function and the bandwidth allocation function. Especially, we design this scheme to control the VBR MPEG video traffic.
Using OAM cell in this scheme, a source endpoint sends the information about the frame type and size of a corresponding cell block to a destination endpoint. These OAM cells form F5 flow of a corresponding virtual channel connection(VCC) to perform performance management mechanisms. The function of layer management in B-ISDN protocol reference model dynamically allocates the bandwidth depending on the information. MPEG video frames are varied in time and additionally have different priorities according to the types of each frame. This proposed algorithm uses the cell discarding scheme according to priority.
The proposed algorithm has low error ratio in view of allocating bandwidth compared with prediction algorithms. Besides, the consideration of the priority makes high priority frames have low loss ratio.
