ABSTRACT
A Study on Strategy for
Contents Development of Archives
Lee, Yun Kyung
Department of Information and Records Management
The Graduate School of
Hankook University of Foreign Studies
In a digital network age, core competitiveness of all organizations is in their possession of excellent contents. In other words, qualitative or numerous contents signify the competitiveness and economic power of society and its organizations.
In particular, a large majority of organizations which compose user interfaces on-line must produce and process contents which correspond with user demands, and this has become a core issue of organizations. National archives of various countries handled in this study react sensitively to such flows and have been continuously thinking of ways to realize existing off-line methods on-line. Not only that, by making maximum use of the merit of being on-line, they have been producing contents through suitable material and mediums according to various classes using appropriate documentaries. In the case of Korea, while various systems for the creation, management, and use of digital Records such as a Knowledge Management System, an Administration Information System, and a Records management System are spreading, detailed services for application and for users are being overlooked. Also, past records produced in forms that are not digital records still have not been able to break away from openings focused on suppliers and reading systems.
Although it was thought that anything could informationalize past data with digital technology in the beginning of the information age, this is simply computation converting medium, not informationalization. In other words, computation of past data can not be considered as real content, and this study focuses on contents using documentaries of national archives, examining the definition, types, and forms of contents.
This study particularly defined and used the term of archive contents or archive information contents and observed which archive contents are being produced, constructed, and applied for users of which class and for what purpose in archives of various countries, particularly national archives.
Through such processes, characteristics of archive contents of various countries for users were grasped and implications were deduced. Also, good and bad points of the 'Archive Information Contents Construction Project', which is being developed by the National Archives & Records Service, our country's national archive, were observed and points that should be reformed in the future were examined through analysis cases of other national archives. Although an overview of the construction project of the National Archives & Records Service, as a project that is in progress with a long-term plan, still can not fully be grasped, contents are being constructed in structured and systemized ways using documentaries and are being offered to users and as a result, the responsibility of providing a turning point which expands a broad understanding regarding historical facts and important national plans through archives should not be overlooked.
