베드로전서에 나타난 교회의 정체성

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문의 목적은 베드로전서의 핵심 메시지가 적대적인 주변세계와 의 관계성 속에서 교회의 정체성을 정립하는 데 있었다는 점을 고찰하는 것이다. “흩어진 나그네”로 소개된 베드로전서의 수신자들은 주변세계와 분리되어 고난을 받고 있는 공동체이다. 그들의 고난은 주로 하나님에 대한 배타적인 신앙, 이방신들에 대한 경배 거부, 여러 종교문화적인 행사 및 모임의 불참에서 비롯되었을 것이다. 그들이 당한 고난의 유형은 대부분 주변 사람들에 의한 언어적 폭력이었을 것이지만, 로마 당국에 의한 사법적 박해도 포함한다. 베드로전서의 저자는 이러한 주변사회의 박해에 대해 어떻게 대처하기를 요청하는가? 이것을 이해하기 위해서는 베드로전서에 나타난 교회와 세상 이해를 서로 상반된 입장으로 바라보는 엘리엇과 발취의 논쟁을 살펴보아야 한다. 엘리엇이 교회와 세상의 관계를 저항의 관점에서 본 반면, 발취는 순응의 관점에서 본다. 그러나 베드로전서에서 순응과 저항은 양자택일의 문제가 아니다. 베드로전서에는 주변 문화에 대한 저항과 순응이라는 양면적인 요소가 병존하기 때문이다. 본 서신에는 수신자들을 한편으로는 로마제국의 선한 시민으로서 사회적 평화를 위해 노력해야 하지만, 다른 한편으로는 그리스도에 대한 충성과 헌신을 위한 고난도 감수해야 하는 존재로 묘사하고 있다. 베드로전서는 교회의 정체성을 적대적인 세상에 대한 순응이냐 저항이냐 라는 부정적인 의미에서 세우는 것이 아니라, 오히려 택하심을 받은 하나님의 백성이라는 긍정적인 관점에서 확립하려고 한다. 이러한 관점에서 볼 때 베드로전서에 나타난 교회의 정체성은 독특성, 연대성, 세상에 대한 책임 등으로 요약될 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this article is to study the identity of the Church in 1 Peter. Doubtless the addressees of 1 Peter as "aliens" and "strange" are experiencing suffering. Their suffering might result from the Christians" exclusive devotion to the worship of their God alone, their refusal to honor the various deities and their withdrawing from religious and social participation. This suffering will often have been felt at the level of antagonism, slander and social ostracism from those amongst whom they lived. But for some Christians, who were accused before the Roman magistrates, their suffering could entail their trial and execution as criminals.
How does the letter position the church in relation to the world? In order to understand this, it is helpful to investigate the Elliott-Balch Debate. While Elliott viewed the relation between Church and World in 1 Peter as resistance, Balch saw it as conformity. But that is not the matter as an either/or approach. Because there is material in 1 Peter that points to continuity between Christian values and those of the surrounding world, while other parts of the letter point up differences between the world and Christian group. In other words, there are elements of both resistance and conformity in 1 Peter. While the audience of 1 Peter is to strive for social tranquility, social conformity is the mode of the group up to the point of articulating ultimate loyalty, loyalty to God alone. They should endure the suffering as “Christian”. 1 Peter consistently establishes the identity of the church positively. Thus the identity of the Church in 1 Peter could be summarized as uniqueness, solidarity and responsibility for the world.
