From the ancient times on, there has been the adverse historical tradition that the ruling class in the society devised and developed mechanisms 'to blame the victim' to keep the social status quo and to sustain their privileged status. In that circumstances, the downtrodden people have felt the alienation and the sense of inferiority and powerlessness.
Especially, in the British minority race case in the 1970s and 1980s, as British racism had been deepened and enlarged by 'New racism', the historical trend mentioned above never failed to blame the minority race as violent and dangerous people and alienated them from the British society. As white people in politics, police, major journalism, and culture sector systematically spread the cultural and institutionalracism, minority race's abused and negative image gradually became a sort of stereotype in the British people's consciousness.
In the 1980s, the black British film renaissance was a kind of reaction and resistance against the perverse historical tradition and racial differentiation. The riots associated with 1976 and 1981 Nottinghill carnivals and the Rastafarianism influenced the emergence of the black film renaissance. Under the intellectual influence of some British black cultural critics such as Start Hall and Paul Gilroy and Homi Bhabha, and in good financial condition by public sponsors, through their new independent films, the young black film practitioners, in order to correct their abused history and twisted racial identity, and to resume their original identity and to get miority race to throw away the sense of inferiority, set up independent film collectives such as Black Audio, Sankopa, and Ceddo in the mid-1980s. Asa result, The 1980s have been a kind of watershed for Black independent film and video.
Their manifestos were questioning the mainstream media's representation of black people, positing the need to inventory the available techniques within the independent tradition, and describing the need for a collective pratice in approach to film, as opposed to privileging the director as the sole creative force in a film. With the emergence of a new generation of practitioners whose work reflects a diverse range of thematic and formal concerns, there has been a significant shift not only in terms of accepted notions of British film culturebut also in terms of institutional cultural policy.
The early phases of the black workshops were marked by a search for a 'film language' capable of expressing the many experiences of black people in Britain. To unify black British renaissance cinema as a movement, they emphasized policing and diasporic aesthetics in the films.
