This essay studies Shin Kyeong-rim's novel The Lonely Mountain. The Lonely Mountain is story about Jong-gu who is a deeply lone human. Frequently 1950' novel is existential story that the characters in the story have the existential isolation, so the lonely characters are on the brink of ruin. At this time the isolation is human natural and original feeling, the characters are single man, and their behaviors are engagement so called in Existentialism.
But this perspective does not apply to Shin Kyeongrim's navel. His novel treats the isolation which is the existential subject, nevertheless he narrate the isolation in historical and social real of the 1950's. This narrative method is different from existential method.
The characters in his novel are lone, and they know why to be lone in their real of 1950's. Their isolations are caused by their real, not human natural and original feeling. And Their behaviors is not engagement so called in Existentialism but actual mutual communication and consensus. Moreover This story shows the horizontal circular structure in that isolation→overcome of isolation→isolation in development of novel, so Jong-gu has the isolation again in the ending of navel.
